"City-obliterating asteroid screamed past Earth the other night – and boffins only clocked it just 26 hours beforehand." Watching the animation, that asteroid was moving at serious speed. To pass us inside the Moon's orbit like that was a pretty close encounter. t.co/bjT7uhQJuO

Nice to know it passed by. That would have made quite a mess

That would have made quite a mess Certainly would have done: a rock 57-130m in diameter travelling at 88,200 kph relative speed.

If it hit our planet it would most likely come down in the ocean. If it had land it would most likely come down in an unpopulated area. ' Meteor Crater' in Arizona was most likely created by a 50m wide asteroid, creating a crater 1,186m wide and 170m deep. So if the recent 'near miss' had hit a city, then yes, very nasty. But that is a very low probability event. More likely that the next much anticipated major California earthquake will occur with equal or even more devastating overall effect, or a Supervolcano will let rip, which could have severe climatic effects across the whole planet.

Yes, sooner or later, someone is going to visit Yellowstone wearing stilletos and they're going to make it go pop!

Reading about that (Yellowstone) potential supervolcano is pretty unnerving.

Reading about that (Yellowstone) potential supervolcano is pretty unnerving. It blew as part of the general end of the world rumpus in the disaster movie 2012. Quite spectacular.

Thankfully not a fatal close encounter, there has been a meteor shower on display these past two nights in Greece, so I thought I would chance my arm. I went outside and had a longish wait for a small meteor. Then my son had enough and went back in but a few minutes later a meteor just ripped through what felt like half the sky leaving an amazing trail behind it - never seen anything like it! Was worth the two mosquito bites it cost me.

The one I saw had an exceptionally long trail and what also really shocked me was I could hear it!
