Hi I've been keeping an eye on the forum since it was started and have finally get around to registering!
I'm wondering about people's experience with the new Caiman II DAC - I've got a Bushmaster II and am considering upgrading to something 'much' better. A Metrum Octave II has been suggested, but I've been wondering how the Caiman II would compare especially under battery power?
A bit of background - my main system is all digital and consists of: SB Touch (with Fidelity Audio mods), Bushmaster II, Conrad Johnson CA200 'Control Amp' (integrated with a passive pre), Amphion Xenon Mk II speakers; soon to be joined by a Vortexbox based on an Item Audio pc.
Cheers. Bill

Hello Bill and welcome to TAS! I have a Caiman II DAC, having upgraded it from a Bushmaster II. I wrote some thoughts on it here. One thing to note: both the C-II and BM-II sound significantly better on battery power. As in, it's hard to comprehend how much since Stan put so much effort into the PSU stages to render them immune to input power quality.
If you have any more questions, ask away!

Welcome to TAS I think the Caiman Mk2 using battery in a similar league to the Metrum Octavia Mk2 using SPDIF if you want to use USB the Metrum will outperform the Caiman MK2 I use the same battery set up as Martin So it will depend how you going to use it and how important USB is for you

Thanks guys.
Sounds like you are all impressed by the Caiman II, apart from perhaps the USB aspect. If USB isn't a key requirement, what would you think one would need to spend on a DAC that would significantly better the Caiman II (itself on battery of course) - and what product(s) would you be thinking of?
Cheers. Bill

Hi Bill - can we call you that? BilliumB sounds a bit like a drug to cure gall-bladder disfunction! Anyway, can I suggest that you whizz over to the appropriate section and start a thread there ( Source Components in this case). That way it will be most useful to others searching for similar advice. Thanks in advance
