Anyone have any master laquers?
Just unexpectedly won a box set of master laquers on ebay. These are unplayed and sealed.
The question is - do I play them or not? What would you do?
These are one offs, but on the other hand are the closest I'll get to the master tape, so I'm very tempted to play them.

If you do play them, do it very carefully and make sure you capture a recording at the same time. I seem to remember that you can get away with playing them only a few times. Nice problem to have!

I know it sounds a bit of a simplistic question, but why did you buy them? Are they an investment or are they for your pleasure. You can either stick 'em on your wall, or stick 'em on your deck.

I agree with Martin. What is the point of having them if you don't play the music contained thereon?? Play once, record to digits and tape at the same time. Hopefully, the one play won't do too much damage in case they are also to be a 'collector's' item.

Aye, thought of that, but they will be worth less if I unseal them, not that I bought them as an investment, it was more a spur of the moment thing, it was only afterwards that I thought about the dilemma!

An investment? Vinyl? Naa... Ali, I was over getting my Technoarm rewired by John @ Audio Origami the other day and he let me hear one he got from Lloyd Cole. (Yes that one...) "Brand New Friend" master laquer, have to say as a record for playing it sounded amazing - better than normal vinyl. Every time you play it though it wears out.... I'd say its an investment rather than a record to play.

Get yerself an open reel deck - everyone should have one anyway! You need to record it to a good tape at 15ips.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they play the lacquer just after cutting it to check that all's well. Then it's sleeved and sealed and sent off for production.
You've got a real should I/shouldn't I dilemma Ali, because you'll never get a vinyl record so close to the production master, bearing in mind that the lacquers are used to make the "mother" stamper, so the vinyl would be a minimum of 2 process steps away from the lacquer.

Very tempted, but I think I'll just leave them sealed.

Did your mother never tell you to keep new stuff for a good thing matey . Resist your temptation and keep em untouched and pristine . You know it makes sense .

I'd play them once and make the best damned digital recording I could.

With these laquers, its only a thin vinyl coating over metal so every time they are played its worn. Can only play so many times then its gone.
I'd keep it mate.

I guess I just don't understand the 'collector' mind set. I can see no point to these unless you play the music. It is about the music isn't it??
