Oh-kay. So Kamran Ince didn't go down too well amongst the Four Seasons brigade. On to something completely different. One of my favourite solo piano works, and one of my two favourite pieces by Haydn. Mostly I'd rate Haydn as wonderful 2nd tier stuff, but in this quarter hour long piano piece he hits the musical nail on the head for me. It's a set of variations and to my humble ear it has a marvellous sense of continuity, grace and melancholy beauty. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_in_F_minorQuite a few recordings around, I've chosen one by Austrian pianist Friedrich Gulda. Help yourself to any of the others. Let's see what you lot think. It's the first piece on this album. (The rest of the album is wonderful, too. A great pianist, Gulda, he's handy with the jazz syncoptaions as well, or so I am informed.). Unfortunately, the lively succeeding Mozart piece follows far too quickly after the sadly sublime ending of the Haydn.

to my humble ear it has a marvellous sense of continuity, grace and melancholy beauty. Yes I can see where you are coming from. Beautifully played, lovely phrasing. I did enjoy it but not sure I would make a point of sitting down especially to listen to it; wouldn't be fair to call it background music though. Somewhere in between 'very nice' and 'passed the time pleasantly' so a 6 from me.

Give it another couple of plays and it may well grow on you, Jules. Quite profound and moving music, imo. Especially for Haydn. - I see it as a precursor to late Beethoven in a way.

This is very much my cup of tea. I'm quite familiar with Haydn's rather vast collection of piano trios, but not similarly well acquainted with his solo piano work, so this was a treat. I've had it on repeat for a while now, and I'm enjoying the process of getting to know the composition - not tired of it yet. Gulda is also a nice discovery - I see he did an album with Joe Zawinul, which I'll definitely be checking out.

A six from me, Jerry. The Mozart which followed it was much more to my taste. The playing is excellent throughout. There's an interesting article about Gulda here...

I didn't expect to like it especially but it is rather nice. I'm going to give it a 7 for both the piece and the compelling playing.
