Shamelessly pilfering petea 's excellent idea for Core Albums, I've slightly modified it for classical music. Since many recordings exist of each work, let's make it 'Core Music' to eliminate the recording itself from the decision making. Rules: "what do you consider to be your core classical music? And, to focus the mind a bit, you are not allowed more than 11! Yes, that is effectively a randomly chosen number, but to accommodate taste-drift (I'm either on a conceptual roll or have had too much wine too early in the evening) I'll permit a 2 album change every 23 days! And, to make it trickier let's make the list ranked based on how long the album has been on the list - longest to shortest!" - petea Here's mine... Beethoven - Symphony No 5 Mahler - Symphony No 2 Shostakovich - Symphony No 13 Durufle - Requiem Poulenc - Stabat Mater Vivaldi - Gloria Bach - St Matthew's Passion Respighi - Roman Trilogy R Strauss - Four Last Songs Stravinsky - Rite of Spring Glass - Violin Concerto No 1

Interesting. And a few years ago, before internet streaming entered my life and my music was on my shelves, this would have made total sense. But I now find myself much more in exploratory mode, and particular works seldom stay on my playlist for long simply because there is so much more music instantly available to have a try with.
But, looking at my current playlist and pondering, I guess I might come up with these.
Bach - Passacaglia & Fugue BWV 582 Bach - Keyboard partita #2 Beethoven - string quartet op 131 Brahms - 2nd symphony Shostakovich - 10th symphony Vaughan Williams - Songs of Travel Weiss - solo lute sonata #11 Beethoven - piano sonata #30 op 109 Mahler - 9th symphony Mozart - string quartet #15 - the only minor key Mozart quartet out of 23! Langgaard - 7th symphony

Shostakovich - 10th symphony . . Mahler - 9th symphony Yowzer - I could easily have chosen these two. At least we have some overlap, Jerry!

So, that's Mahler's symphonies, and I've still got one choice left. Result.

Not if you include Das Lied von der Erde

Elgar - Symphony No 1 in A Flat Minor (Barbirolli / Halle) Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez (Yepes / English Chamber) Elgar - Enigma Variations Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No 2 Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherazade Rachmaninov - Symphony No 2 (Boult / London) Dvorak - Symphony No 9 Dvorak - Symphony No 7 Vivaldi - Four Seasons (Nigel Kennedy original recording) Gerswin - Rhapsody in Blue Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, No. 52. (Maria Wiegenlied / Oscar Church, Stockholm)
I'm not 100% certain of the order of numbers 4 - 8 in terms of either preference or when they impacted on me. The first 3 are correct though and I can still recall when I first heard them (although it was a different version of the Rodrigo). The last is a recent addition and is from the Naxos recording of the choir in the Oscar Church, but I really only ever play that track.
Overall this was much harder for me as I play much less classical music than either Jazz or other types these days it seems and so I had to think quite hard about this as there are many pieces I really like, but play fairly infrequently.

I found this much harder than selecting my non-classical choices. I only whittled it down to eleven by restricting myself to one piece by any one composer when, in truth, I could probably named eleven by almost any one of them alone. Let's face it, I could even have picked eleven versions of The Four Seasons, or the Lark. Mahler - 8th Symphony Elgar - Cello Concerto Bach C.P.E. - The Three Cello Concertos Bach J.S. - Unacompanied Cello Suites Bantock - Hamabdil for Cello & Harp Beethoven - 6th Symphony Gesualdo - 6 Books of Madrigals Holst - The Planets Vivaldi - Four Seasons Pärt - The Deer's Cry Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending

Guys, this is great. It's given me a lot of classical pieces to reacquaint myself with and some new ones to listen to.

Whilst I do like Classical music, I find myself listening to it rarely and when I do, I have to be in the right mood. I think with Classical music it is an attention thing for me.
Jules introduced me to some interesting stuff and now I am using Spotify I am find more and more that I like.

My spotify is backed up with new releases Paul - it's fantastic!
Remember that there are plenty of shorter of works to enjoy if you just want to dip your toe in now and again.
16 mins is all it takes to listen to one of my favourite works. Here is an astonishingly good recent recording - play it loud, very loud.

Langgaard Pettersson - 7th symphony EDIT - not that anyone cares, I am sure, but for the record, I have no idea why I typed Langgaard when I meant Pettersson on my final entry.

Three of us have the 4 Seasons in our list, surprised Jerry didn't as well ... Looks like we need to revisit this very soon.
