April (2) 2019 - Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On (1974)Standing on the Verge of Getting It On is the sixth studio album by Funkadelic. I love the first three Funkadelic albums for their rock solid rhythm playing and for Eddie Hazel's ferocious and thoughtful guitar playing. After those three, he left Funkadelic for a spell and this is the album that welcomed him back. He wrote most of the songs and his guitar playing is on top form throughout. If you don't know Funkadelic, this music may surprise you. I don't say you'll like it, but it's not what most people think of when they think of funk. It has as much in common with James Marshall Hendrix as it does with James Brown (...perhaps even more!) "Good thoughts bring forth good fruit. Bullshit thoughts rot your needs. Think right and you can fly."

I am looking forward to hearing this I have listened to a bit of Funkadelic and love stuff like Maggot Brain. Perhaps the best name for guitar based song ever and just magical guitar playing, but I have not listened to this album

I've had a good listen to this and I am surprised at how enjoyable it is. Sometimes funk is perfectly matched to a piece of drama on TV but I don't often listen to it on its own. It's far from my main listening tastes but that's fine although the entire album had me wishing for a change by the end. 3/5.

I think that the album can be criticised for 2 things, Martin, and those are that there isn't much deviation from the main theme on any of the tracks and that the last song is too long. So, I understand your feelings. On all of the other albums that I know by this band, the jamming stretches out and explores things a good bit more than here. Those albums also differ by having a little of what feels like filler between many massively high points. Maybe the best way to enjoy Funkadelic is via a playlist or Best of album?

This sums up my own experience with Funkadelic Some great highs but always a few fillers on the albums I listened to

I have also just realised that Martin's experience will have been compounded by the fact that the last two tracks on the Spotify version are extras and they include a different version of the title track. Stick to the original format and it will seem much improved!

That explains the 'sameiness' towards the end!

Three from me. "I'll stay" has a great intro, and the guitar reminded me a bit of Python Lee Jackson's In A Broken Dream of all things, and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" is almost up there with Maggot Brain in terms of guitar playing, but the rest of the album was, I thought, a bit average. I might give it another go at a later date.

There's a bit of funk featured in every episode of Project Binky featured right here on TAS. Thought you'd like to know!
