Looking at two options so far TASCAM DA-3000or a Nova Fidelity maybe the X45 Happy to look at other items I want to play any of my reel to reel tape decks or vinyl into the Digital only TAD Pre Amp TASCAM Seems to be the pinnacle of studio kit which gives other features such as recording to SD Card circa £850 As far as the tech goes and commoditised to a degree at least Nova Fidelity A moving target as the technology improves. Also offers streaming and interweb connection, ripping Vinyl, tapes and CDs to a choice of hard drives, movable or solid state. Clever software to do things I may or may not need. Ball park of £2000 maybe more What would you go for ?

I'd go for the NovaFidelity but then I am slightly biased owning an X40 myself.

I have been very impressed with the AQVox network equipment and the lady who designs it has been involved in pro-recording which is more what I suspect the converter was aimed at. We record onto SSD recorders and resolution is very important to us as the the amplitude range on the signals are very small - mainly contact microphones. Her designs seem very low noise and so I decided to give them a go as the price seemed pretty reasonable. Our other recorders are aimed more at sound for video / film and live music, especially on location and the controls are a bit fiddly to keep them small(ish) and portable and I fancied trying something more rack-mount sized. We have the 744 recorder and couple it with the 442 mixer. They live in a field bag along with cables and mics. etc and so make quite a relatively compact setup. A 744 would also do what you'd need I suspect but they are not especially 'user-friendly'!

Najda will do that and replace your preamp! Or just use its SPDIF output to another DAC. Several of us multi-channelists use Najda with some serious kit. But it can be used in stereo of course. You'd have to have someone build it into a case and give it power if you want any special options. They also do a ready built one. It would still cost a chunk less than the ones you listed. You could then also go built in RPi/Kali reclocker and I2S, as I do

A quick shot of the 744T in action and as you can clearly see it is monitoring a 'live' recording of Natalie Merchant performing "The Gulf of Araby"! These are quite small units (ca 200 mm wide) and the sides are smothered in connectors (essentially inputs on the left and outputs plus monitor and camera feed on the right). The unit contains a HDD / SSD and can also take cards. You can record 'raw' on 4 tracks or of course mix first using something like the 442 below or take an output from a desk. It can act as a time master and they can run off a mains feed or, as here a standard Swit-type video battery. I doubt this would be a viable / cost-effective route for you, Mike, but I thought it might be interesting anyway. You can use line-in instead of a microphone feed (the unit can provide phantom power, the Røde stereo microphone that is connected is self powered and is designed as a primary video mic.).

Oh, and reason I brought it home was that when I fished it out at work I realised that I had never fitted the new handle to our Porta Brace bag. By the look of it that cat wasn't as dead as Røde claimed!

New £1745 from Audio Affair and one on Ebay for £1,095 Still more than the TASCAM which I assume is a solid design for lots of work in a studio Focusrite is another thought

Thanks again Pete. Anything as serious as you are doing looks out of my depth Some time in the future I would like to fiddle about with getting my reel to reels onto digital although it will take a very long time and I might give up !

I think it's being discontinued. Gazjam uses one 😉
