The CD red book standard was very nearly 14-bit. This was because Philips had 14-bit DAC ICs available in abundance, whereas Sony wanted to go higher quality with 16-bit resolution. Philips resolved their quandary by going with oversampling, using 14-bit DACs to derive true 16-bit resolution. A very imaginative and commercially astute solution that got them off to a great start in sound quality.
By the way, I had a Laserdisc player (Pioneer's name for Laservision), bought in Tokyo on one of my trips. At the time, it completely trounced tape for video quality.
