A new 50p coin will honour the legacy of Stephen Hawking, who died last year at the age of 76. The coin features Hawking’s name, a drawing of concentric circles representing a black hole, and one of Hawking’s most famous creations: an equation giving the entropy of a black hole, a measure of its internal randomness or disorder. That discovery that a black hole’s entropy depends on its area was one of Hawking’s most important scientific contributions. It means that when anything falls into a black hole, its area increases. This realisation led to a breakthrough: if a black hole can gain entropy from outside it, it should also be able to radiate some away into the universe. The phenomenon of a black hole slowly losing its energy is called Hawking radiation. MORE

Great coin issue and a nice honour to the man who conquered his body's limitations as well as a decent slice of physics.

Superb design. Should have had a real hole though. Or they should be casting it from something of a higher density.

Sadly, it seems it won't be released into general circulation and is available for purchase from the Royal Mint website for... err, £10!

Wow! What a shame it wasn't for general circulation. More people should know what a giant mind we had in our midst.
