The Living Mountain opens in Edinburgh;


The new record store, founded by Firecracker's Lindsay Todd, will specialise in leftfield and hard-to-find vinyl.


A new record store called The Living Mountain will open in Edinburgh on August 1st.

The store, the latest project of Firecracker Recordings founder Lindsay Todd, will be open to the public (from 10 AM through 8 PM) for the duration of this year's Edinburgh Festival, which runs for the first three weeks of August. After that, it'll become an appointment-only business.

Drawing its name from a Nan Shepherd book, The Living Mountain will serve as an extension of Todd's various music and art projects (Firecracker, Unthank and Sacred Summits among them.) Asked what kind of records he would stock, Todd reeled off labels like Honest Jon's, The Trilogy Tapes, Folklore Tapes, Mood Hut, Sex Tags Mania, Public Possession, Invisible City Editions, Blackest Ever Black, Jazzman, RVNG, Art Yard, Trunk, Music From Memory and more. The new records will be supplemented by hard-to-find vinyl, including secondhand jazz, new age and field recordings.

In addition to the vinyl stock, visitors can expect The Living Mountain to offer a small selection of cassettes, CDs and secondhand books. It'll also serve as an art space with sculpture instillations and in-store gigs. The first exhibition, running throughout August, will feature performances of musique concrète and experimental recordings from the Heart Fine Art archive.
