Zero 7 - When It Falls
The core of Zero 7 are Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. To complete the group for different albums and performances, they have used a variety of guest singers over the years, and what a talanted lot they are: Mozez, Sia, Sophie Barker, Tina Dico, Jose Gonzalez, Eska Mtungwazi.
I've chosen this album, When It Falls, as being at their height of laid back cool tunes with absolutely gorgeous soundscapes, reminiscent of Air around the time of Moon Safari. It features Mozez, Tina Dico, Sia, Yvonne John Lewis and Sophie Barker on vocal duties. Somersault is probably the best known song with Sia making it her own. Despite its electronic origins, this music throws a big soundstage and sounds superb when reproduced in good resolution.
The CD is unusual in incorporating Cactus Data Shield copy protection, preventing it from playing in many PCs. Thankfully this nasty corruption of the data sectors is not present in the streams from Spotify and Qobuz. Turn it up and enjoy!
