I understand what it measures. However, if it was an overall level of 'goodness' all valve amplifiers would be finished. Professional engineers and all magazines that measure, apply different rules to valve amplifiers. Stereophile is usually quite clear about this.

That depends on how difficult your loudspeakers are, and that can easily be measured. Never shut doors.

Agreed, horns have a different operating envelope, for instance.

Agreed, horns have a different operating envelope, for instance. Quite and horns go well with valves for some music. Horns measure differently too ! I tried them and loved them.
However like you, my real preference is for big speakers and huge high damping factor amplifiers and music that compliments that.
Jill is quite the opposite and regrets the time I sold the Klipschorns & 300B SET's ...........
YMMV E&OE

I never ever, use measurements to decide on what Hifi I want to buy, I go purely on how it sounds.

There are horns and horns, mid bass and sub bass horns have different requirements to higher frequency stuff. Reputation and people I trust, also factor in. Most of my system is not something you can go somewhere and audition at a dealer. For me dealer pressure is something to be wary of.. esp. if heaven forbid they are in your home! Some of my stuff is rare, only available second hand and at distance. Going somewhere to listen to a particular compression driver for instance, in a very different system, different horn cutoff, different XO point etc, only takes you so far. You get it, it might work, it might not. 2nd hand is good here as you can move it on and not suffer new car like depreciation. Letting your ears decide and taking your time is great. I guess JBL 2435Be compression drivers measure better than Vitavox S2's.. have had both, kept the S2's In these cases, like-minded folk on online fora are a help. Both to share data and get invites to listen to stuff. I am not your average hifi box buyer though.

I think how the kit works with other kit is a big thing. Synergy.
Speakers may sound good when hooked up to a certain amp AND measure well but sound totally different with another amp.
Measurements are handy as well as using your ears.

As an " outsider" to all this hi-fi guff, I've never been able to work out how there can actually be an argument. If an amp makes my music sound shite I couldn't care less if it can make an oscilloscope sit up and beg, shake hands, and then pop out to the kitchen and bring me back a cup of coffee, my music still sounds shite. I don't want shite music. Conversely, if my music sounds great and somebody tells me that it can't sound great because "the numbers don't lie" I'm going to get rid of the idiot, not the amp. Perfect answer close the thread. Nothing more need be said, respect dude.

Plenty more to be said and this from a punter who never looks at specs There are things measurements can give us There are those thing/s we are *not* measuring. If the hifi industry was in the same league as aerospace, MOD contracts, petrochemical, big pharma, National Physical Lab we would have the undiscovered found and measured The very least we would have are products that fail certain, to be established criteria. Good old style specs. Shite newly discovered. Scrub that lot One of the attractions about TAD is they furkle around with all sorts, *listen* to their kit, feedback and improve. Love to be a fly on the wall at some of their meetings. What did Max Townshend discover with his wobbly stands and racks ? He measured
