For me, too. I shall listen to that later.

Sorry Martin - I was being ironic knowing that Jerry isn't the biggest fan of that particular conductor ...

I've listened to three movements on the PC and it sounds fine to me.

Ah, Vanska, an objectivist rather than a subjectivist when it comes to musical interpretation. Just the notes, perfectly and blandly presented. I'll give it a go.

Just started listening to that Mahler 7 on my 2nd (conservatory) system with Beovox cx100 speakers.
Sounding rather good! Vanska actually seems to be generating some tension and excitement. Well I never.
I'll defo try it on the big rig later.

I love all those Respighi pieces, Jules.
Dutoit and Lane are my two favourite recordings but don't have the Ancient Airs.

Here's a taster from the new Barenboim album of 32 Beethoven Sonatas and Diabelli Variations.
This was recorded live during lockdown from Pierre Boulez Hall.

I'm looking forward to Barenboim's new Beethoven sonata set, released end October, I think?
I've a LOT of time for him both as pianist and conductor.

Playing this in 24/96 on Qobuz. Chailly highlights different aspects of Respighi's music compared with Dutoit or Lane. The orchestra are very capable and the recording is brightly lit. Thankfully the organ is fully present and makes a great contribution, if not in the same league as Lane's room shaking experience.

Ah, I thought you didn't rate him as a conductor!
My bad.

One of my favourite conductors, his fairly recent DG Brahms symphony cycle is superb! Love his Bruckner, too.

I've got the Brahms, have added his Bruckner cycle thanks. I prefer Barenboim's Staatskapelle and Chicago Bruckner cycles to his Berlin Phil one, as much to do with the sq as the interpretations, I think. It's worth trying all of them, they are different. And the Chicago cycle is the only one that includes the 0th symphony, so it has to be the best! It's a shame he hasn't recorded much Mahler, just the 5th I think, it seems ideally attuned to his temperament to me but he is said not to like it much!
