Interesting responses gents thank you.
I am a big Purple fan, and love their work, the Rainbow project was just Blackmore wanting more freedom from the suits that controlled everything. However if the MK II had stuck together they would have been huge.
Interesting in the US everyone is Zep, they made it bigger there than here imho, yet on stage Purple were far more accomplished, but the unholy trinity of Zep / Sabbath / Purple change the face of music for the rock and blues scene forever while inventing doom metal at the same time quite an achievement for a couple of Brummie and London bands.
Rainbow gave Blackmore more space to indulge his ego and whims for sure, however it produced some stunning music with RJD.
The Sabbath connection sorry I do not see, maybe you are thinking of the H & H and Mob rules which came four years after, I prefer Iommi with RJD, but absolutely understand the Ozzy thing.
I did see him with Randy Rhodes before he was killed in that plane crash, I felt the Blizzard of Oz was much more suited to Ozzy's talents. (bat's heads not withstanding)
Yes, our 6th form common room which were we never allowed near, it was mostly Zep/Heap/Bowie/Purple only when the girls had study period was YES flogged to death. Mind you there was a rather attractive head girl I could never remember the name of....

No, no, not Topographic! That's a tough album even for fans! Try The Gates of Delirium from Relayer. That's a proper mini symphonic movement. Hmm, well, OK. But it might have to wait another 40 years. I've never liked Phil Collins, banded or solo. But yeah, I'll give that Relayer track a go later.

Oh, yes, He was Genesis, I've never liked them either - hence the association, I guess.

However, proper Genesis had Peter Gabriel singing.

Whoa, Yes are the most classically influenced of all the big Prog bands (apart from the dreadful Sky). I remember buying issue one of "Guitar" magazine, many years ago, and on the cover was John Williams, and the strapline "I'd be bloody awful with a group." Ha! What a memory, and isn't the interweb wonderful (sometimes)? I found it. Take a look at the cover and see who he was chatting with about bands. p.s. I actually liked Sky. Kevin Peek is/was one of my favourite "unknown" guitarists.

Try The Gates of Delirium from Relayer. Martin try it from Yesshows they had perfected it by then , I can never get on with the Relayer version. OK. Yesshows Gates. Urk. 2 minutes 40 seconds in and that horrid vocal style starts. It's just like Topographic. Makes my skin crawl. Hate it.

Forgot to vote , 4/10 very much of it's time and I don't like the vocalist . I would say though if I was a bit younger I'd have probably bought this at the time as I did like early Purple before moving in another direction , if you see what I mean
