OK. So after the limited success of my Sitsky violin concerto choice for January ii where Paul liked it, Jules thought it promising and Martin decided to listen to something else that he ddn't like I return by popular demand [well, Jules] to Mendelssohn, the surprise success of January i. Sorry Martin, but it's chamber music. The two piano trios. Brimming with lovely melodies, excitement and beauty. Loads of recordings of these masterworks, but I have chosen the Vienna Piano Trio on Nimbus as they get the pacing absolutely spot on imo.

Well, they were nice and very much more listenable than much of the turgid chamber music out there. Most enjoyable, 4/5.

Yay. Two 4/5 on the trot from Martin the Mendelssohn Hater. And one of them chamber music. There is hope for you yet, Martin!

4/5 from me, but I enjoy a lot of chamber music. I do disagree with your descriptor for that score though, Jerry. I can't quite give them a "five," but they were definitely much better than "Quite Nice" I thought. So 4/5 and Very Nice from me.

So a 9/10 from you?

Contrary to Martin, I'm very keen on chamber music, and the trio form in particular. I'm less familiar with these pieces though. I wasn't so sure about them when I listened last night, but now that I'm more familiar with them I'm enjoying them a lot more. Right now I'm somewhere in between 'Wonderful' and 'Quite Nice' - will see where I land after a few more listens. I'm listening to a recording from the late 60s by the Beaux Arts Trio (collected here). I do plan to get around to the Sitsky also.

These are much more like the Mendelssohn I’m familiar with, and as such ‘quite nice’ would describe them just fine … Very well performed but on first listen the music is not something I think I would sit down and listen to without doing something else - they don’t fully hold my attention, as I can’t find anything compelling about them like I did the Symphony.
