And now, as Monty Python used to say, for something completely different. This popped up on one of those Spotify searches which lead you far away from the intended destination! Larry Sitsky. Contemporary Australian composer. No, I hadn't heard of him before, either. As implied by the title Gurdjieff this music is strongly influenced by Armenian music, which is a magically beautiful influence as far as I am concerned. Not at all sure it is really a "concerto", more a series of orchestral movements featuring a solo violin. I think it is wonderfully atmospheric, and interestingly varied. The piece under discussion is on tracks 2-8 on this album. The track 1 piece I dislike, so either skip that for now or don't judge my offering by it! open.qobuz.com/album/0002894814025

C’mon chaps give this a listen! It’s certainly interesting and good (for me at least) to be taken away from one’s comfort zone now and again. The traditional folk infused violin melodies are fused with what I might lazily call ‘contemporary classical’ atonality. Certainly very well performed but doesn’t quite emotionally engage me yet. Saying that, I found the ending genuinely quite unsettling! Although only listening on PC speakers for now, it sounds very well recorded and most dynamic - drums on track 4 are quite something. And the xylophone on track 6 is almost palpable in quality. I will listen again on main system for sure as this might be a bit of a slow-burner.

I thought I heard the distant sound of tortured screams.

The lad does like a scary nearly-made-me-crap-myself snare drum, I'll say that for him.

I just love the very distinctive (imo) Armenian tonality, very non-Western!

I like it, Jerry. It does "meander" a bit in places, my usual complaint I know, but on the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had to call a halt, though, when that bloke swept his walking stick along some metal railings in a high-rise block concrete staircase though, about a minute into his 3rd Violin Concerto.

Listening now on my work system. Will listen again later on the 'big rig'.
The first Concerto is, err, awful!

It's pretty good, Jerry, and quite Armenian in feel as you say. Great side drum! I'm giving it an 'enjoyed'.
