Now I think I'm in a minority here for my love of classical ballet, but for anyone who even just loves the music of Swan Lake, please give this a try! It's the new Royal Ballet production featuring the utterly divine Ms Marianela Nunez as Odette/Odile and Vadim Muntagirov as Prince Siegfried. I have been fortunate enough to see Nunez dance a number of times and I haven't seen anyone better - electrifying technique and the way she inhabits a character is so moving. It takes a little while to build up to the 'showcase' dances but stick with it and you will be rewarded. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0001qzc/the-royal-ballet-swan-lake

Well, I did at least see it at the Kirov.
I prefer my ballet music Prokofiev'd, with a lot more edge. Oh, and without the ballet.

Swan Lake - I'm not a ballet fan but there is some glorious music amid the mundane and tedious. For once, I need a highlights album!
The only ballet I actually enjoy is the setting of Mozart's Great Mass K418 by Uwe Scholz. Modern ballet, fascinating and really quite moving at times - and an excellent performance of the Mass! I have it on DVD. Here's the start on a very poor video copy ...

Sorry, Jules. Philistine though I may be I know better than to even attempt to sit through two-and-a-quarter hours of Ballet. I enjoy the music, and I've got 2 versions of the ballet suite (Mehta/Israel Phil. & Rostropovich/Berlin Phil.) plus a Naxos "Swan Lake Highlights" album with Dmitry Yablonsky conducting the Russian State Symphony Orchestra. The problem with ballet, though, is all that bloody dancing.
