I have recently purchased an NJC Audio Reference Headphone amp along with an Allo Boss V1.2 DAC / R-Pi. This set up really does sound great, but as I'm so impressed with the NJC HP amp I'm very curious about their DAC.
I have limited funds and after scaling back my system over the last few years I'm thoathed to now start building it up again.
Assuming this is a high quality DAC - www.njc-audio.co.uk/html/referencedac.html I'm wondering whether using it with a Chromecast Audio or just a Pi will be a good move or will I be limiting what's possible? I know I should be going for an Allo Digione, but the ost of that with the DAC is too much.
Will a high quality DAC negate the need for anything other than the CCA or Pi?
Cheers Fellas!

ChromeCast Audio will get you streaming for £30 + the cost of a 3.5mm optical cable. If you get the Lan adapter and feed it good juice (DIY needed) it sounds pretty darn good.. WiFi and good juice (ideally linear, but a big phone booster battery works) it's not bad at all..
Rpi is little more faff, burning a SD card, and you'll need something considerably better than a Hifiberry add-on to get to where the Chromecast Audio is connected optically.
Rpi is much more flexible, NAS drive, USB drive (although not recommended), or anything stored on your network on a connected pc is accessible).. I had some problems with the Spotify connect plugin but seems fine after a reburn of the SD card. Other than that Volumio is well established and stable.

Thanks for your reply Steve, very interesting! I'm currently using a Pi with an Allo Boss Dac hat and have a Chromecast in my kitchen system. What I don't have is an external Dac that I can listen to different options with. I have 2 options (I think) eiher stick with the Pi/Boss or buy the NJC Dac and use with a Chromecast and sell the Pi/Boss on.
In a nut shell, could the Dac/CCA sound better than the Pi/Boss? I have an Ifi Ipower PSU that I could use with the CCA.
Which optical cable are you using?

Update, If your DAC can handle I2S direct in, I can report that Rpi + Allo Kali reclocker and with a suitable I2S DAC setting in Volumio.. RPi will slay Chromecast Audio Spdif in (using Spotify premium as source). Be prepared for an interesting journey getting it to work though
