This is the AA meeting, yes? Good...
I am an audiophile... There, I've said it. Oh that feels so much better, I can unburden now...
I had it bad, really bad. Components, turntables (lots of turntables) and...oh my god...speakers, many, many speakers. My garage is like a speaker graveyard. KEF's, Heybrooks, B&W's, all lurking down there calling, singing the sweet song of temptation... Fix us!!! Fiiiixxx us!!! I can hear them now! AAAAARGH!!! Stop it!!!!
Here, in my listening room, a QUAD 306 amp is staring at me, lifeless now, it's power cut. A pair of ART Skibo speakers stand like sentinels guarding the far extremities of the room, silent and without voice. Waiting, waiting... But no, I will not bend, I will not break. Be strong and still my beating heart. Silent they are and silent they shall remain. A plethora of interconnects and speaker cables, the devils spawn. They darkened my doorstep, once, twice, thrice a week. Men in vans of many colours brought them to me....forgive them lord for they know not what they do.
But now I am free! I sit here still, listening to music, but not on the dinosaur which lurks in the corner waiting to strike. Oh no, the sweet music emanates from speakers costing just 20 quid from Argos. They slurp their musical juices from a JVC AX-A3 integrated amplifier, which cost nothing... Nada... It was given to me by another brave enough to kick the habit. The wonderful music drifts from my computer into the only part of the dinosaur which still lives. She caresses the bits of data streaming like gold dust from my computer, manipulating it, working her magic. Her name is Rega and she is the goddess of digital and analogue...
Noooo!!! Noooo!!! I am weak and it is too late, she whispers seductively into my ears: Hear the beautiful timbre of the cymbal, the pounding beat of the kickdrum, synchronised with your heartbeat. The rich vistas of sound which weave about the consciousness. ...and then I fall, plummeting into eternity... lost, LOST!!! LOST IN MUSIC.... Once again...
