Here's a question for the more technically minded:
For many years I've had a certain amount of audible noise whenever using the phone stage in my preamp. This is most obviously associated with the PSU for my PC - I can here extra static when PC is busy with something, and when I unplug the PC the noise goes away. I have a couple of turntables and the noise is the same whichever I'm using. At some point I figured I'd either get a proper PSU for the PC or just stop using it entirely and replace it with a dedicated network streamer. Anyway, I've just been tinkering with my main turntable - a 1210 - because it was recently moved to a new shelf, and I just got around to calibrating everything. I took the opportunity to make a small change under the hood, disconnecting the pitch adjust module from the main PCB. I was surprised to discover that after making this small change the noise is no longer audible - there's still a bit of noise, but only at very high volumes and not nearly as nasty sounding. A couple of questions:
1) Why might this have happened? It's puzzling to me because as I said I'm fairly certain the noise is related to the PC's PSU.
2) My tonearm is connected to the pitch adjust module for grounding, which was recommended by the guy who made the tonearm cable. By disconnecting the module from the main PCB, have I severed this connection to ground? Could this have anything to do with the reduction in noise? (In case it's not obvious, I know nothing about electronics, so apologies if this is a daft question).
