8) Audiostatic ‘Wings’. A variant of the infamous ES100s these remain the most transparent ‘speaker I have ever owned. Rubbish power handling, no bass, but clarity to die for. I tried using. Final S200 sub but could not seem to knit the system together. I'll never forget when you drove away from my place with those tall panels strapped to the roof of your very small car!! Yes, interesting speakers, to say the least. I tried a few subs with them but none worked well - I think the problem was the very slow bass rolloff of the Audiostatics, starting way up around 200Hz, I'd guess. Next to impossible to integrate properly with a subwoofer.

Hi Jerry Yes, they were a real curates egg ! Sorry to hear about the old lug’oles - lets hope its temporary. Sadly I lost a load of HF hearing on one side (heaven knoes why) a few years ago, accompanied by some mild tinnitus. Irritating but now’t can be done. Listening now to the Lyngdorf 3400 driving the Quads. I remember you thought the previous 2200 was reasonably good - I think you would deffo like this new one. Pop in for a listen and a cuppa if you are ever near. Be good

How about some more loudspeaker journeys? Don't be shy!

Ok here we go...
First set of speakers was a pair of MS 10i that I hooked up to the obligitary Cambridge Audio amp and a Technics CD player.
That was basic but pretty good. I then swapped up to the 25s from MS but they were too big for my small room and erent that great at low volume.
Next up was the Mission 732i - a long deep standmount that I paired with an Arcam 8/8P combo back when that was the rage. A good combo - rich and full but Lord, dull as dishwater. I had them hooked up to an 8000s as well and that was a bit better.
Incidentally it was adding the 8P that opened my eyes to the bollox in HiFi. I expected(and had read) about the big improvements to be had but it didn't make that big a difference. I was disappointed in that.

Now,since seeing a Quad II in a shop I'd always been interested in valves. Next amp up was an AVC EL34 and I tried the Missions with them. Didn't work. After reading various forums I'd worked out why and soon knew I needed something a LOT more sensitive.
Can't remember which forum it was but Andrew was selling his Audio Note Ks and I knew they were for me. £350 and I was delighted. They just seem to really like that AVC amp and adding a bit silver into the speaker wires really made them shine.
They're keepers!

I've also picked up a few other pairs of speakers here n there - usually charity shops or gumtree.
I've had Kef Concertos(£5) Sony Brooklands (£10) Tannoy Mercurys,Mission 702/753s all for sweeties.
Buy them, hook them up,listen then sell them on.
None are better than the AN Ks.

Then I saw the Horne Shoppe Horns for sale at £300. Got a listen to them on the end of a Unison valve amp and decided they were for me.
My other keepers.
They pair well with all my amps and simply disappear when the musics on. Very natural, very musical.
So that's it.
Next...if they appear will be a set of floorstanders that do deep, deep bass but I'm in no rush!
Now...I say I'm in no rush and I'll tell you why. Synergy.
That really sums up both my current systems and speakers very well - the synergy between all the components is just right.
My weak link is my source - I'd like a better DAC but finding one that fits all my requirements is hard!
Anyway,that's it now!

I won't be changing mine ever, not only did it take 4 people to lift them down the stairs its a painstaking task to configure them. Turn back the clock to when I was 14 (ish) I think it was some Wharfedale Diamonds. Had so many since can't remember apart from the Snells I have in the garage man cave.

Bit of a one trick pony for my speaker journey. Previously would have been cheap DIY lash ups but have now had the Quad 57's for 26 years now. They are not perfect but their strengths outweigh the weaknesses. Additional tweeters cured the beaming/narrow sweet spot and a (surprisingly) well integrated sub fills in the bottom octave; No plans to ever change.

Wow you have them hanging, Alan. How do they compare with being on the ground?

More space around them, not enough room to have them on the floor without them being in the way. First hung them in a big room in France, sounded better than on the floor.
When we moved here the extension was designed (ahem, cough cough, back of a fag packet job) with a vaulted ceiling especially to house them where they are now. Anyone is very welcome to come and have a listen.
