A belated hello, sorry.
I started in the 70s, buying my brother's amp and speakers. I thought it was a bargain, but he surely ripped me off.
Ended up with a heavy pair of 3 way speakers, and my other brother's Rotel amp. Great for my flatting days.
My first good amp was a Plinius IIc/VIIb pre/power in 1986. Remember auditioning an A&R A60 as well.
Also got a Dual 501-2 turntable.
Haven't used the turntable in 15 years. It started playing fast, which was annoying.
Cables were not a consideration back then.
I couldn't afford to buy anything else, with my first daughter's birth in 1988.
My solution? Ignore it all. Didn't go into stereo shops ever.
Actually missed some okay music because of it.
This changed around 2003.
Joined eBay.
Bought a tiny pair of Wharfedale bookshelves, and then Mission M71s.
I bought top of the line speaker cable from Dick Smith (around £2/metre).
Remember forcing my wife to sit in the lounge, with a Nakamichi DR2 tape deck, and marvelling at the clarity!
Was astounded at how good it sounded.
My main source of information then was What HiFi magazines.
2004 bought a pair of Quad 11L speakers, still using my Plinius.
And upgraded to QED Silver Anniversary speaker cable.
This was quite bright, and What HiFi had Merlin Chopin? RCAs as brightness tamers.
Bought those, which settled it down.
Was also my introduction to power cords.
Somewhere around then bought a pair of PSB 2B speakers.
Ended up selling some Merlin cables in New Zealand, as well as QED Silver Anniversary.
Realised in 2005 I'd never be allowed to buy the stereo gear I wanted, so decided to go portable.
Bought a 5th Gen iPod, and got the Red Wine Audio iMod from Vinnie.
Had Grado SR80s. Ended up with Sennheiser HD25-1. Have now bought my daughters and wife pairs, with Custom Cans mods.
Sold HD25SP Concords for a wee bit.
Sold Grado headphones on eBay, but Grado's NZ distributor was really unhappy about that, so it stopped (after approx 200 pairs).
Got some rolls of Van den Hul D102III, terminated them and sold those.
In 2009, extended the house, and put Merlin Scorpion speaker cables in the wall.
Then in 2011, was allowed to buy my dream amp; a Perreaux R200i.
Had a Denon Dac DA500, but upgraded to Beresford Bushmaster II in 2013 after advice from some in the UK audio community.
Also have Triad Audio L3, RSA SR-71A, RSA SR-71-B and Corda Stepdance portable amps.
Astell and Kern RWAK100s. Grado SR60, SR80, SR325, RS1 headphones.
Akiko Triple AC Power Enhancer.
Mains cables are Merlin Black Widow and Merlin Scorpion.
Then, a huge change this year - been saving my £25/week pocket money for awhile.
ATC SCM19 speakers
Audience AU24 SX interconnects
Arriving is a Beresford SEG with supercaps and clock mod with a supercapped PSU (from Tony), with Halide Bridge.
Work system is a A&R Cambridge A60, Mission 780 speakers, M2 Tech HiFace Two and my Bushmaster II.
Use Atlas Compass and QED Revelation.
All I figure I need to do from now:
Clean up my mains.
Upgrade my amp, and speaker cables.
