Empire Of The Sun OST ~ John Williams (Spotify) In a catalogue of outstanding film scores from John Williams this one is my personal favourite and perhaps his most evocative. The film is a powerful and moving masterpiece and JW has captured the emotion perfectly in this score. "LOOK!!! LOOK!!! The Cadillac of the skies....". That line alone almost moves me to tears when thought of in the context of the story...

That line alone almost moves me to tears when thought of in the context of the story... I have this, it's good, as is the film as a whole. I think is best score is Duel of the Fates, at least the version without the voice overlay.

Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Recomposed by Max Richter
Take Richter's and Glass's looping circularity, add a big dose of out-of-the-box thinking and some sheer brilliance and you get this. It makes you listen to Vivaldi's glorious composition all over again.

Thanks for the heads up on that Richter / Vivaldi 4S, Martin, I've never heard of it before! Amazon samples sound intriguing so I've just ordered the CD.

The best way to broaden one's musical horizons is to listen to what others are listening to, as a result I am giving Jerry's choice above a 'spin'. Thanks Jerry

Oof! Jerry reels over in shock!
Well, waddya think, Dave?

Yesterday ...
I have the complete Solti set - apart from the 6th (which is awesome) these certainly wouldn't be my one and only Bruckner symphonies, but well worth a listen and in demonstration class sound.
And then ...
Very fine.

And this cheapo 2 CD set is distressingly good! I picked up a whole bundle of this series from a charity shop for 50p each. Some really good stuff!

Verdi - Requiem - Guilini, Philharmonia, EMI
Thank you, Chris (he bought the LP box set for me from a charity shop). This is, as I suspected, a quite brilliant version. I hope you can hear it from the rig!

Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 6 - Gergiev, Kirov, Decca
Wow! I had a suspicion this would be great when I bought it in FNAC in Brussels a couple of weeks ago. It's more than that, the performance and recording are both quite outstanding.
