Karajan will be syrupy, Gardiner will delineate the different strands of the choir much better. The best performances have anger and fury in the Dies Irae.
Poor quality, but Bernstein achieves the pace I like...
Interesting........... I don't think this will be on my list for regular plays as I admired rather than enjoyed it. I listened all the way through Gardiner and dipped into Karajan. Both good in different ways but I found Karajan to be a bit too much 'stage' and 'performance' rather than pure music making. To a degree, it just confirmed that, willing as I am to discover new stuff, my tastes have pretty much polarised now and its jazz that I love most, be it Bach, Carter or Brubeck, followed closely by classical guitar music - thats the type of guitar rather than musical period of course. Room for lots of other stuff as well but that is where my main interest lies. Funny, that is pretty much where I started out, so the circle is completed.

Don't get bogged down in genres, just listen and decide enjoy!
Fixed.
Listening at the moment --
A mixture of Philip Glass-y minimalism and Mediaeval chant. But it works! - very beautiful.

Oh yes - only on silver disc I am sure.
Hey, it's the music not the medium that counts, right?

Quite possibly my favourite set of this wonderful music, it doesn't get much better than this. Played last night - Opp 18/4 and 132.

Thanks Andrei (a few posts back) This is just what I need for the morning of tackling bad records (the accounting type). James is a client and was kind enough to arrange a piece he wrote for Katherine Jenkins (mezzo) with piano and cello, to a piano and soprano version for me to give to Sue. It was special for her since it commemorated the D Day landings (her grandad was special forces parachuted behind the lines on D-1) and she has this thing about being a Katherine Jenkins manquee, in spite of being soprano not mezzo, and about 5 bra sizes short of the popularity vote! It was also called a "band of white gold" and our wedding rings are platinum (close enough!) Still this is beautiful

Saint-Saens: Symphony No. 3, Batiz, LPO, ASV
My favourite performance of this wonderful symphony, Batiz nails it. Great playing, great sound, superb organ.

What a co-incidence. This is my favourite - again on CFP. I do wonder how often our favourite versions are really just the first we listen to and get used to the phrasings and interpretations. I compare other versions with this and very rarely find the interpretations satisfying.

I compare other versions with this and very rarely find the interpretations satisfying. That's a very good point. I can't say this is my favourite version, as it's the only one I have! But I enjoy it immensely ... Famous / infamous for recording the organ part in Chartres Cathedral and the orchestra in Chicago ...

The 'Best Covers' thread reminded me of this one, so thought I'd give it a spin.

I do wonder how often our favourite versions are really just the first we listen to and get used to the phrasings and interpretations. Yes, I think that is a significant influence - but not always. I love occasionally finding a new top version!
EDIT: meant to say, Durufle on organ is proper impressive!

Stravinski Firebird suite. No cover, its a recording from the FM4. I think from the proms at least 15 years ago. Can't remember the band either.
