Wow, the best ever Beethoven op. 12 violin sonatas? Frank Peter Zimmermann. Thanks to the review in that Art Music Lounge webzine thingy.
Actually, the pianist Martin Helmchen deserves equal credit, he's quite superb.

Trifonov seems to be a real critics favourite at the moment but I find his playing curiously soulless from what I've heard - much as I love Rach 2 I couldn't get very far with his much lauded recording; same goes for his Liszt.
