Variations on Bach led by Gidon Kremer. Very entertaining.

I've been playing this album quite a lot recently. It's a grower. Powerful and intriguing.
Aulis Sallinen. 8th symphony, Violin concerto, the other orchestral pieces are good, too, and are probably my favourites on the album.

Should Nick Cave and Warren Ellis belong here I am not sure but haunting and beautiful with a contemporary classical feel

Great choice Alan, difficult to beat Scheherazade when I'm in the mood for it.

Antoni Wit - a most excellent conductor in contemporary music. Here in Lutoslawski.

Osmo Vanska's emotionally detached, under interpreted and utterly pointless Mahler symphony cycle continues apace. The Deryck Cooke completion of the 10th symphony was released in February. Actually, Vanska's complete incomprehension of the Mahler idiom (unemotional Mahler?) works very well in the 1st movement. Very slow but technically perfect playing. Superb sound quality. YMMV

I find this hauntingly beautiful. I just love the halting, off beat, slowly evolving rhythms of Armenian music. I'd be interested what John thinks of it. It might just be his cup of tea.
