I have a vinyl box-set of Svetlanov's Rach - wonderful full-blooded performances.

Bassoon quintets by the quite obscure Johan Brandl, contemporary with Beethoven although I wouldn't have guessed!
I'm not a fan of the bassoon as a solo instrument, but these are quite delightful.

I became a Baroque bassoon convert after hearing some of the Vivaldi concertos performed live a few years back.

Currently having a virtual spin, for the second time today. Hypnotic. This one dedicated to our very own Naim Freak, Alan.

Shostakovich - Symphony No. 13, Muti This new Muti performance and recording is completely awesome, it even beats my previous favourites from Haitink and Previn. The 13th is one of my all-time favourite symphonies and depicts the Babi-Yar massacre during WW2 as well as the general plight of the Soviets. Even more so than the austere 8th, the 13th is an emotional wrench with an impact that surpasses almost any other music I know. The Chicago are well up for it, the soloist sounds properly Russian and the chorus are magnificent. The recording is excellent and the Qobuz presentation in 24/96 matches it. If you've never listened to any Shostakovich, this symphony alone confirms his place as one of the most important composers of the 20th century. If you only listen to one movement, Babi-Yar, In The Store or Fears will tell you all you need to know. open.qobuz.com/track/84566344

^ Too heavy for me atm. I got about 15 minutes into it the other day before becoming too depressed about the world to continue.
Today in the mood for pleasantly laidback orchestral. Stenhammar fits the bill nicely.

I'm going to save the Muti 13 for the big rig - I think it would be wasted elsewhere ...
