Hmm, yes. So was the Ravel album I praised before that. But they aren't French in either the cheekily jolly cutesy way that I find so nauseating, or the wishy-washy nothingness in certain other French composers. I suppose it shows that generalisations generally fail when looked at closely.

Indeed, I seem to remember you made me listen to something by Mendelssohn that sounded half decent!

Never quite understood why Mendy has enjoyed quite such high status as a composer!

Never quite understood why Mendy has enjoyed quite such high status as a composer! Cos he wrote some fabulous music. e.g. String octet Symphonies 3 and 4 Hebrides and Midsummer Nights Dream overtures Violin concerto Piano trios x2 Violin sonatas String quartets

I'm with you on some of the chamber music but never really clicked with his orchestral works or the VC.

Ah yes, you've reminded me now Jules, it was the VC. Not bad at all.
As for his other orchestral works, meh!

I think it's just human nature to return to previous long held views and forget more recent experiences that refute them. I'm sure most of us do it, I know I do.

Damn, Jerry exercises the TAS search engine and confuses us with facts! Bang out of order ... LOL. The VC is still hugely overrated ...

Woo, what a review! ... This album of works by English composers Britten and Bliss really has everything going for it. This starts before the disc is even removed from the case; the packaging is attractive and simple. The liner notes are detailed, extremely well written, and provide a wealth of information on the composers, the works featured on the album, their relationship to one another, and their place in the larger historical context. Truly first-rate work before listening even begins. The recorded sound quality of the disc is exceptional. It gives the impression of being in the best seat in the best concert hall, only better. The stereo imaging is magnificent, and the spaciousness and separation of the instruments are better than what is sometimes achieved on SACD. There is never a moment where each and every note from every instrument cannot be clearly heard. As for the actual performance, the Vermeer Quartet lives up to its reputation as one of the great string quartets. Every aspect of the execution is well conceived and thoughtful -- rhythms, articulations, dynamics, tone color, and balance are all masterful. Oboist Alex Klein delivers one of the warmest, most pleasing oboe sounds in memory. He blends beautifully with the strings and matches their musical concept masterfully. This album is a genuine must-have addition to any collection. - TiVo

Some nicely vivacious Telemann playing here, sounds like nicely raucous original instruments as well!
