-- ah, I do love a bit of RVW -- interesting, reminds me a little of Maxwell Davies-lite. Which is no bad thing at all, as I generally find him a bit heavy! I'm familiar with McCabe as a pianist but hadn't realised he was a fine composer as well. Thanks Martin.

Tchaikovsky: Symphonies 1 & 2 - Rozhdestvensky - USSR State Radio and TV Symphony Orchestra. From a complete set via Tidal streaming. Wonderful. -- I spent a while trying excerpts on Tidal from many versions before settling down with this one. Recorded in 1972 & 74 in superb Melodiya sound. Ooo, those plangent Russkie woodwinds and blatty brass, you cannae beat 'em in Russkie music.

Yay - a new Pavlova symphony album from Naxos. I do like her soundworld, quite distinctively interesting if you don't mind laidback and melancholy.

As I previously suspected from the Spotify stream, the new McCabe release on Naxos CD is transcribed from the LP. I wonder what happened to the master tapes?

- I like this series of bargain-priced CDs. Russian provincial orchestras, and none the worse for that.

Malcolm Arnold - concertos for clarinet, harmonica and guitar. -- the first two are good, the geetar concerto I can manage without hearing again, I think. The idea of an harmonica concerto sounds a bit strange, but this is powerful stuff! All listened to on headphones via portable minidisc player while sloshing on wood preservative to one end of my wood-clad dwelling.

- Starker & Schneiderhan & Fricsay - quite possibly the most powerful version of the Brahms Double Concerto I have ever heard.

--- oooo, yum, classical sax, love it! Poulenc uses it in the Stabat Mater, as I recall.

Hmm, I'm not fan of Poulenc. I know you rate his music highly but it just irritates me! Whitbourn uses the sax in a more traditional jazz way.

Ah, shame. I must admit his music does connect with me, I've always loved the Organ Concerto, Concerto Champetre, Stabat Mater and Gloria.
