-- err, yup, Sculthorpe's complete string quartets with didgeridoo accompaniment. Very good actually! -- a magnificently large scale choral / soloists / orchestral type thing.

-- the Khatchaturian. It's probably my fave violin concerto, the melodies are just outathisworld. And this is as good a recording as any, I think, and better than most.

-- still the best Kullervo for me. -- a lot faster than my preferred Nikolayeva and Petruschenko. But most pianists are. -- laid back late evening fare -- there's something about Silvestrov's music that hits the spot.

-- the symphony is excellent, and superbly recorded. The other pieces not quite so well done. And a fun time with Tidal streaming last night - listened to a mix'n'match Bach B minor mass - different movements from different performances. My faves turned out to be .... and Chalk and cheese you might think - 'authentic' and 'traditional' - but both very moving.

Complete Works for Piano - Richard Wagner (Stephan Möller - Piano) What do you mean "I thought he only did morbid bloody operas that go on for three weeks?"

Heh - Wagner also wrote a rather fine symphony before he got delusions of operatic grandeur! _______________ Got a bit bored with the 1st mvt, so swapped over to this for the rest of the symphony! ... -- ahh, more to my liking, some passion to be heard!

I have difficulty getting engaged with the Brahms symphonies. For me, the peak of his writing output is the German Requiem, simply sublime.

Good lord! - astonishing music. Try the Karajan set! A music friend reckons Brahms 4 to be the best symphony ever written - and I find it hard to disagree when listening to a great performance. Immensely powerful and exciting, as well as wonderfully beautiful in the tenderer moments.

-- the Amazon buyer review sums it up quite nicely -- "Bottom line: Every pianophile needs to hear Niederle's First Piano Sonata. If you like Liszt, Alkan, or Rachmaninov, you will be stunned and deeply moved by this powerhouse of Romantic turbulence and ecstatic passion. Niederle proves himself to be a mighty virtuoso and his playing is truly magisterial and earth-shattering on a Bosendorfer"

John McCabe - Symphony No. 1, LPO, Snashall, NaxosAt last - after years and years of trying to find this (only) recording on vinyl, Naxos have just gone and released it for the first time on CD. I love this piece! It's also on Spotify, but sounds like a poor LP transcription.

Coo - thanks for the heads-up, Martin - I'll have a listen! ____ - the magnificent op 34 quartet. Just as good, or better, imo than the later more famous quartets. And the Vlach are superb, and include a 1st mvt repeat that extends the enjoyment by 50%! - great stuff. Large scale and magnificent -- the symphony's opening peroration will grab you in this Jarvi recording. No, not a match for 7-9, in their varied ways, but well worth a listen.
