How does that RR recording sound, Jerry? I'd describe the sq as sturdy. Not exactly scintillating. Nor is the performance, that's kind of sturdy, too. I prefer Karajan on DG.

I have the Ashkenazy/Philharmonia 6 on CD and remember it being a good performance.

Good grief, I had to Google 'What plastic are CDs made from?' just to check that Martin is still playing with a full deck! It turns out he is correct of course - 'Most of a CD is made from a tough, brittle plastic called polycarbonate.' Naturally I was referring to the LP.

Coates isn't British. Is there another Coates?
Stet! Eric Coates!

I'm not taking anything away from Benedetti's superb performance, but Tasmin Little has an interestingly different take on the Elgar VC. Poetic against NB's commanding strength and forcefulness The Chandos recording more of a wash of sound compared to the chiselled precision of the new Decca. Quite similar to the performances, actually! open.qobuz.com/album/0095115508329

I played the Elgar VC to Ruth just earlier. She agreed that NB's playing is superb but did not take to the Elgar very much. We both agree that much of his music is overwrought, the cello concerto especially so. She does like the Enigma Variations, though.
He's not in my list of top 20 composers, I think.

I've always liked the Elgar cello concerto (I must be the only person here who does!) but much of his music has only grown slowly on me over the decades. I can't say I yet fully appreciate the VC or his 2 symphonies. But they continue to slowly grow and in my view seem to be worth persevering with. By far my favourite symphony is his 3rd, in the completion by Anthony Payne! I do wonder how it would have turned out if Elgar had completed it.
But the Benedetti VC has succeeded in opening my ears considerably further to the merits of the VC. I can now go back to the more traditional view taken by Ms Little and enjoy it a lot more than before. In fact, a lot of the slower music in the finale by Little I now find quite mesmerisingly beautiful.

No surprise to me about Tasmin Little!
Such a shame she retired from concerts, I never got to see her.
