Difficult times - among the many significant conductors who continued to work in Germany throughout the war years as well as Wilhelm Furtwängler, were Carl Schuricht, Karl Böhm, Hans Knappertsbusch, Clemens Krauss and Herbert von Karajan.
That Spectator article is quite strange - condemnation based on a single letter about a single meeting 2 years after the end of the war, following what must have been a very stressful 'de-Nazification trial'. To me it says far more about Furtwangler's undoubted arrogance than any allegiance to the Nazi party. Elite musicians are often quite weird creatures, difficult to assess by everyday standards, then and now.

I did sample that Bach but bit too old-skool (slow and romantic) for my tastes at the moment ...

Wow - this is a great Tchaik 5th I seem to remember waxing lyrical about the Oslo's 5th! Here it is with Jansons at the helm...

Well, yes, but as we have previously agreed, Jansons de-Russkifies it, which makes it a rather pointless listening experience as far as I am concerned! Petrenko hits the Tchaikovskian nail on the head for me.

An explosive Tchaik 6 here by Ormandy and his Philadelphians, in great sound except the early stereo is a bit ping-pong / left-right. I must explore more by Ormandy.
