Haitink live. VPO. Bruckner 7.
Impressive, but just a little too cool and cerebral for me.
1997 Tokyo.

now here is a charismatic Bruckner 7
The climax of the slow movement is nothing short of apocalyptic.

came across this on an unrelated spotify search and enjoyed it. File it under tonal and tuneful 20th centurry. Paul Ben-Haim. 1897-1984.
which led on to this, which may be even better

Ave Donna Santissima: Itinerario Musicale Intorno A Maria - Anonymous (Armoniosoincanto/Franco Radicchia)
Another monthly freebie from NAXOS, and it's utterly enchanting. The polyphony is quite primitive but the voices are lovely. There's also a flute, a glockenspeil, and what I think is a bowed psaltery in there too. Music for a meditative mood, perhaps.

Not me, although most conductors can play keyboards to some degree.

Have a listen to this beautifully crafted 'Gavotte en Rondeau' by Isabelle Faust - it really encapsulates her precision married to great musicality ...

Bruckner - Symphony No.9, Jochum, Staatskapelle Dresden
Still the absolute best scherzo of the 9th of all the recordings I know.

this is yummy
a very varied programme from the sheer beauty of Ethel Smyth's Romanze movement to the avant-gardness of Maconchy.

Bruckner - Symphony No.9, Jochum, Staatskapelle Dresden Still the absolute best scherzo of the 9th of all the recordings I know. My goodness, yes, that is a full-on performance. Very MartinT. Sound quality is showing its age now, though. Bit squally at the top and flabby in the bass. Have moved on to this. Jansons and the Bavarian RSO. New to me and very good.

Yes, agreed about the SQ, it's not the best.
Thanks for the Jansons pointer, I'll listen to that tonight.

Curiously, the sq on the older, DG recording of Jochum's Bruckner 9th holds up much better!
.... actually, it sounds great! Mid 60s DG - whodathunkit?
