I got my first Record Player when I was about 15 it was a Boots record player I think it cost about £50 and had some speakers attached to it via some bell wires. It sounded much like my radio at the time perhaps a bit better but to be honest I was not bothered about sound quality. I tried to find a image of it but cannot find one. I only had a few records and would play them every evening after school. My next turntable was a part of a Trio component system. A bit better than the boots but not by much but lasted in my system for over 10 years and got used regularly. At the time I was very much into going to Shades to purchase the latest album and then hopefully play it to death. I would buy about 2 to 3 albums every week. It looked similar to this

This was my first deck! Dual 514 in rather a fetching champagne finish. It was a fab first deck, completely reliable and easy to use. Everybody bought the 505-2 at the time but I chose this as it looked more 'modern' at the time. I was only about 14 though ... Happy days indeed.

My first turntable was a Garrard 2025TC as part of a Dansette music centre, complete with ceramic cartridge.

Mine was also a Dual, although I had a 601. I was given it by my Dad who’d upgraded and I was about 15 or 16 when I got it. The arm was stock and the cartridge a well worn Shure which I replaced with an Audio Technical, AT95E. I had it for about 4 or 5 years and used it pretty infrequently, but always liked what it did.

After a few years sharing a van der Molen 'thing' with my sisters, my own first separate turntable was a mint, unused Garrard SP25 Mk.IV chassis donated by a friend, mounted into a Garrard plinth, donated by another friend. I vividly remember cycling back home with the deck tucked under one arm (loose bits tied down with a combination of string and sellotape) and the plinth hooked over the handlebars of my bike. This was long after most SP25s had died and gone to landfill. My Dad had owned one just like it when I was younger and mine gave me loads of fun for a few years.

I next got a Gyro This was my first proper turntable. I loved the looks. But for what ever reason I was expecting more from it I think I had a SME 309 arm and spirit cartridge I cannot remember what phonostage I had at the time I guess my frustration was it was a bit light weight in the bass

My second, and first proper, turntable was a Connoisseur BD-1 in a plinth of my own construction. I used Micro Seiki feet and treated myself to a birthday present of an SME 3009-II revised arm. Cartridge was the ever-reliable Goldring G800. It looked rather like this but with a different arm. The platter was undersized and the on-off control kick-started the platter to help it get up to speed and to brake it when switching off.

Next up for me was an STD 305S with Moth (Rega RB-250) tonearm and a Nagaoka MP-10. Had this for many years. Not subtle to look at but industrial build quality and sounded very respectable indeed - my system didn't need anything better at this point in time. Sadly I seem to have lost the pics I had!

As I was a bit disappointed with the Gyro I ordered the kit to convert the Gyro into the Orbe This was a lot better I now had more bass and found it a more enjoyable listen

Yes I'd like to hear an Orbe at some point ... After my STD305S I went for a Pioneer PL-71 that I imported from the US. It's a very nice deck - looked and sounded great, even though I probably didn't hear at its best due to a headshell issue that I didn't know about for ages.

The PL-71 is a fantastic deck. Wish I had bought one.

My next deck was a Michell Syncro. It's a gorgeous deck which I inadvertently spoiled by installing a Helius Aureus arm on it. Very bad move and the worst designed, most badly built piece of crap it has ever been my misfortune to pay money for. I should have kept the Michell and put a better arm on it. Like the one in the photo below.

Next up was a Lenco I decided to slate plinth it and put a Zeta arm on it. However never got to hear it. Took it to London Sounds and after 2 years of waiting I took it back and sold it on eBay. In between this time I bought another TT

I'm always amazed when I hear these stories of dealers / repairers holding onto gear for crazy amounts of time - I wonder what goes on in their heads?
