What do we think about putting pointy wooden things under amps and the like?

If it makes you feel better why not?

They work. Best of the sensible priced I find are RDC cones. You can even upgrade them with 2 levels of base. That also makes a difference. Best of the lot Black Ravioli, flat and not pointy

They may or may not work depending on the construction of your hifi rack (e.g. wood/metal/glass), and on probably lots of other factors.

RDC is becoming increasingly difficult to source, which is a pain.
I’ve been waiting more than a month for a shipment.
When it’s delivered I’ll have RDC 1.2 cones, come footers and combi bases under everything in my system, all components and isolation racks. It’s good stuff.

Hi slinger yes, I’ve been dealing with Gary Penska from Analogue Seduction (for precisely this brand) who is very responsive and patient. Prior to them, I had a negative experience with hifisupy.nl, who had advertised the RDC 1 cones in stock.
This is what I originally had under some items in my system and hence my preference for going to them first.
It turns out they didn’t and it took me more than a month of constant emails and nagging at them to get my money back. If you no longer stock a part and it’s discontinued, remove it from your site please. I strongly advise anyone to avoid this band of jokers, it’s the only time I’ve felt like I may get ripped off by a company in hifi. If they can’t get little things like this right, imagine dealing having to trust them with something more important...!
In then end I got the money back and thought sod it, I’ll get all 1.2 (superseding model of 1).
This has still taken longer than I’d like, but another part of the project is nearly complete.

Back to the point of the thread, I wonder if anyone who likes to use wooden cones has ever compared them to simple wooden blocks?

Wooden cones work ok. RDC Cones are better, Black Ravioli very much better again.

I hate finding bargains when I'm determined not to spend any more money. Can somebody please tell me what a great buy 10 x used RDC 5 cones and 4 x bases (one slightly damaged) for under £40.00 inc postage was.

The ones on Ebay ?
Grab them

Already grabbed when I wrote that post, Mike. My thinking is that even if they don't do anything for my system I can probably re-sell them without losing money.

They can change things. Not necessarily better for all..

They can change things. Not necessarily better for all... That's why I grabbed the RDC cones on eBay. If they don't 'work' I should be able to get my money back by reselling them.

I modified my main system rack some years ago to take threaded RDC Cones (6 of them). Despite appearing to be very hard and giving no wobble to the rack, they made a surprising amount of difference to sound quality. Anything that has threaded inserts is worth a try.

The way I'm planning to set things up to start with is with the CD player resting on three cones in the three 'good' bases and my amp on top of that, resting on three 'bare' cones. The amp weighs in at 13.5Kg, by the way, so there's probably no need to put any extra weight on top of the CD player. The CD player itself is a lightweight at only 10kg. The Primare CD21 and i21 are both manufactured with three feet (two front, one centre-rear) so I'm not short-changing them. That leaves me four cones to try under my DAC.

RDC cones have always worked well under bookshelf speakers for me too. Not that this is a universal rule, but they improve the articulation across the frequency range and improve the quantity and quality of bass.
