What thinkest ye of the classical 'concept album'? My initial reaction is always to ignore them, which is a shame as they might contain some good music. But there's something irritating about them. I imagine some young thrusting marketing types dreaming up these concepts and congratulating each other on their remarkable ingenuity ... I feel like I'm being sold to, and most of us don't like that. I mention this today having seen, but not heard, the latest release by the estimable Ms Helene Grimaud - 'Memory'. Here's the spin - Hélène Grimaud’s new album MEMORY can be thought as an invitation to mindfulness.
Music that can help remind us “that for all in our daily lives that is trivial, there is a place where meaning is stored”
I think it was Heidegger who said memory is to meditate on what is forgotten. Memory is not concrete – it is a recollection of things past, defined as much by what fades as what remains. The repertoire here is not connected to specific personal memories for me – memory is not autobiographical or programmatic in that sense. My interest is rather in exploring memory as a state of consciousness common to us all, and discovering paths and features of that meditation, suggested by music. – Hélène Grimaud
I'm really not sure what to make of that. Half of me thinks 'intriguing' and the other half 'nonsense'. Actually, when you see that Sheku Kanneh-Mason's debut on DG was called 'Inspiration' I'm coming down on the side of nonsense, it all feels very trite indeed.

So, we have: 9m30s of contemporary music (2 Silvestrovs and a Nitin Sawnhey) and the rest is Debussy, Chopin, and (surprise surprise) Satie. I quite like what she does with the Nitin Sawnhey but not enough to buy an album full of things I mostly already own. Apart from which I prefer the original of Breathing Light. Also, it might just be me, because I'm listening via PC/Q5/DL4sII which is not the highest fi around, but the bits I've played from Spotify sound like they were recorded inside an empty aircraft hanger.
I'll go with "trite" too. Just another way of making a mostly old hat selection sound like a slightly newer piece of unfashionable headgear.

You're right about the recording space, it sounds to me like the sustain pedal is being held permanently down. I've heard much better Satie, not because of her playing but because of the end-of-the-tunnel acoustic. I mostly ignore classical concept albums and this is another one to forget.
I'm stopping it now as the recording is so unpleasant.

Interesting - I won't listen now as I only have my phone right now which I doubt is very revealing ... LOL.
DG and Decca really are the worst offenders for these concept albums. They would like you to think that some earnest reflection has gone into these but really it's sub sixth form stuff ...

The only excuse for a "themed" release is to highlight new artists or composers. Trotting out the same old chestnuts time after time to try to make you pay again for recording you may already own is not a good enough reason. Of course, I suppose "we" are not the target audience. I'm guessing that they're actually aiming at the " Yes, I do like a bit of classical. No, I haven't got a clue what this is called but it was on that advert with whats-her-name. It's probably Beethoven...or that other one," crowd. It costs nothing to record, obviously, and the only real expense is a tasteful new cover that looks nice in the racks at Waitrose and John Lewis. Snobbery? What snobbery?

I started doing this as a joke but it actually turned out looking quite good, scarily.

Paul, that is complete and utter genius - if I could 'like' it more than once I would ... I do think it needs a bigger audience - perhaps send it to DG as a suggestion for their next release ...
