I used to be a world-class piss-artist. My social life revolved around "the pub" and I worked behind the bar at a couple of my regular watering holes. I never got to the stage of fancying a drink in the mornings but a "session" could last from 5 or 6 in the evening, if I was behind the jump, until 3 in the morning. Several times I came home from the pub and crossed paths with my dad, who was going off to work at 6 or 7 in the morning. I toned it down a bit when I got married, but the social hub was still the pub. In fact, it's where I met my wife, who was the best friend of the landlord's girlfriend. I worked in the City for over 20 years and for many of them a group of us used to drink every lunchtime, then go out for the odd evening too. Sometimes we didn't even bother going back to work in between.
The boozing tailed off as the years passed, and these days I can go weeks between alcoholic drinks. I've still got bottles of Port that I bought two (almost three now) Christmases ago, and I do like a drop of Port. Brandy was always my tipple, and I honestly can't remember when I last had one, despite there being a bottle in the cupboard. As for a pint of Guinness..? Not a clue.
My wife became too unwell to feel like going out to the pub over the last couple of years of her life, and it seemed more natural to stay at home with her than to go out without her.
Drinking at home, on one's own, is not only not much fun it's potentially dangerous, in case it becomes fun, so mostly I don't.
I had a lot of fun drinking, and I remember quite a lot of it. I still managed to keep myself quite fit during my boozing years by playing footy, squash, and table tennis. Looking back though, I wouldn't recommend it as a lifestyle and if I had my time over, as they say, I'd probably still go to the pub and drink, but not even close to the extent that I used to.

This is the bit the documentary explores a lot

I've never been a big drinker and in my twenties I was the designated driver most of the time, which didn't bother me at all. I also severely dislike getting drunk.
Nowadays, it's barely 2 units a week, sometimes none.

I think my last drink was at the wedding, 2 and a bit years ago...

I haven’t drunk alcohol since 2013, originally for personal reasons, and now for medical reasons too.

Didn't make a conscious decision to not drink. Doesn't appeal anymore. Should this be in the When you know you're getting old thread ....

I worked shifts so drank weekends and every night every third week , in other words if I was a home at night , I think if I had a day job I probably wouldn't have drank every night but I'll never know . What I do know is when I took early retirement I was able to have a drink every single night , I don't drink much and as the years have gone by I drank less , it's a habit , 6:30 have a beer , wine with dinner . Last month I decided I was fed up with the routine and stopped , nearly done a month , don't feel any different , I haven't given up , just the habit .

I once spent eight or nine months working nights and it totally screwed with my body clock. I found myself looking longingly at all of the closed pubs as I was coming home at seven in the morning. I even had a beer when I got home on a couple of occasions. That got me some awfully 'sideways' looks from the missus when she'd see me enjoying a bottle of lager when she got up.
I haven't had a drink since this was originally posted, but that's not by design. I dare say I'll fancy opening a bottle of something at some stage.
