My first choice for CACOTM and I'll get straight to the punchline. I'm a hopeless romantic. It has to be Dvorak... This is the disc that inspired me to start collecting classical recordings, around only 10 years ago. I've heard and now own several other recordings of these works but this remains my clear favourite. There are 'richer', some might say 'more mature' interpretations available but this is much more engaging imo. The Quintet has precision and a pacy flow, and the interplay between the performers is wonderfully lyrical. The Quartet is delicate and empathetic. I'm very fond of it. I can't find it on Spotify or Qobuz but it can be listened to (and downloaded) at the Linn Records website here

Thanks, Paul. The Linn site only gives short samples. Is there another version of the many on Spotify that you like for us to listen to the whole thing?
Would you like me to setup the poll for you?

5/5 for me. For the music. Just wonderful, chamber music masterpieces. Endlessly melodic. These works have been among my favourites for too many decades! Not sure which recordings I would choose - depends on my mood. But the ones Spotify-linked above are certainly very fine.

I've had issues logging on but back to normal now so will catch up with this soon, thanks Paul!

I've got this version of the quintet...
which is what I'm listening to at the moment.

Paul (OP!) just going slightly off-piste for a minute, I'm wondering if you know the von Dohnanyi recordings of Dvorak 7,8 & 9 with the Cleveland Orchestra. Just mind-blowing Decca digital recordings and the performances are just so taut. I'd say essential for any Dvorak fan.

I have them and can wholeheartedly support Jules' enthusiasm.

A serious 4 out of 5 from me. This is the version of the quartet I ended up listening to, and I think it's a bit special.

I'm not a great chamber music lover, it needs to be memorable for me to be interested. Saying that, I do like Dvorak a lot and these Quintets, quite unknown to me, sound good. I'll give it 4/5 too.

I’m a big fan of Dvorak symphonies and Violin / Cello concertos but never quite taken to his chamber music in quite the same way.
I started off today with a 'legacy' version of the Piano Quintet played by Richter & Borodin Quartet, just for interest’s sake, but quickly lost interest after a few minutes, so tried the Emerson and found it much more energising. 3/5 - enjoyable enough to listen to but not something I would purchase. I then switched to the Elias version and found this even more compelling with more drive and zest about it. 4 / 5 - top class chamber performance. As Jerry says - endlessly melodic; there are some divine themes ...
I would love to hear it in the concert hall if played by a similar standard of Quintet, such as the Carducci who I saw recently playing the Schumann Piano Quintet.

I've actually voted - 'magnificent'. 'rather good' would not do it justice IMO.

I'm interested to find out who thinks it's "Awful," and why.

Oh dear how embarrassing - I've discovered I do actually own a copy of the Piano Quintet! It has the estimable Mr Clifford Curzon on keys. I had completely forgotten about it and years since I have heard it so will have to give a spin when I can ...

I've been revisiting that Škampa Quartet recording, and I think they're a bit of a discovery, for me at least.
