Remotes, like technology are very useful, and often a pain because of that when problems arise. When they stop working, especially on old kit the remote can cost far more than the kit sells for.
Is there an easy way to obtain or fettle a cheap, good remote to fill the gap ? Are there certain signals used by remotes that allow generics or substitutes to fill the gap ?
Panasonic TV remotes are easy to source and I managed to get a generic at around a tenner. Currently trying out a Logitech 650 multi remote so far unsuccessfully, but I am one of the least technically able. Don't hold your breath. The learning facility for kit *not* on the Logitech database is fine if your remote still works. Yet to try that. Most of my kit is not on the Logitech database and I assume most hifi will not be either so hat should be loads of us in the same boat.
What does everyone do ?

I've very rarely had a remote fail. The Ayre one went a bit unreliable and I had it replaced under warranty.
I don't like cheap replacements and I don't like learning remotes. More painful than buying an original.
They can often be repaired with a little care.

Be interested knowing how to take a Pioneer CD remote apart as that stopped working.
The cheap remote for the Panasonic is fine as I do little apart from turning on and off.
Picked up the Harmony for not a lot so worth an experiment even if it only replaces 2 or 3 other remotes

I'm all for using a programmable remote like my Logitech 950 - does need a bit of setting up to get the best out of it, but for lazy so-and-so's like me, it does everything and I don't have to get up from my seat to switch from viewing the TV to listening to the stereo etc, and usually by pressing just one or two buttons. Not cheap mind you.
