The Yamaha NS1000M speakers seem to be very popular at the moment, or maybe they always have been? I've only heard them once at a show in Manchester and wasn't impressed, but that may well have been due to the partnering equipment. What y'all think of them?

I heard them and they have quite a powerful sound. As you say they are quite popular, but as a result they sell for big money on the second-hand market.

They need a really good amp in total control and they can sound marvellous.
Valve amps need not apply.

I had a pair. They didn't stay long - they were in direct competition with some Thiel CS2.3 speakers, and for what I want the Thiels slaughtered them. They do dynamics and detail, but for me they lack the natural plausibility needed for classical music. To me they sounded hifi rather than musical. Stan Beresford bought them from me (10 years ago, maybe?) and he still has them and remains devoted to them, afaik. The Yams actually need to be closer to the wall than that to get a decent tonal balance, I just moved them out for the photo-shoot! <iframe width="13.799999999999955" height="10.600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 13.799999999999955px; height: 10.600000000000023px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 5px; top: 88px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_20027260" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.799999999999955" height="10.600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 13.8px; height: 10.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 630px; top: 88px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_38508875" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.799999999999955" height="10.600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 13.8px; height: 10.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 5px; top: 556px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_10852752" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="13.799999999999955" height="10.600000000000023" style="position: absolute; width: 13.8px; height: 10.6px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 630px; top: 556px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_99615285" scrolling="no"></iframe>

Something like Colin's class A amp would get them to sound good, I'll bet.

I heard them at Stan's and they were good. I nearly bought a pair once but the ones I heard were underwhelming. They need a lot of power to get the best out of them.

We used to use them in studio, never made us think these are great at all
So I rebuilt from the ground up sure did make a nice improvement however a pair of Focal pro active monitors were far more complete and linear some people really do love them for me best left for true lovers of the breed tend to appreciated by the whippet thrashers and toe tappers
David Price is also a fan

They have been in the spotlight for over 15 years. I had a pair and in my opinion need a high power, high damping factor amplifier, that rules out valves and Class A. If you have a small/medium size room they outshine new £15K speakers. YMMV

If you check out my photo above, you'll see a Lyngdorf 2175 amp on the shelf - 175wpc and class D so very high damping factor. I still wasn't impressed!

You're right about Klipsch - horrible things - but a pair of nicely vintage JBLs is up there with the best, for me. I used to have a pair of JBL L110 Monitors - wonderful things, imho!

Although how you lump JBLs in with garstly Klipsches rather defeats me!! Chalk & cheese, imo.

JBLs are mostly great. Klipsch speakers are coarse unsubtle things with the shoutiness of a large football crowd.

They are fantastic speakers, with a far more detailed sound than the Thiel, which I have as well. But they do need to be close to a wall if you want the bass to come to life. I took too long deciding if I should have bought the NS2000M instead. Those are now impossible to find. But all in all it was a good buy.
