Sad, but I've seen many examples like this.

That first image in the OP is just appalling. I am just going to tell myself that they were all on Wikipedia, reading up on the background info of the painting.

I walk past a gorgeous Hotel + Spa right on the cliff top just a few minutes from the flat everyday. Yesterday it was a superb afternoon, the grounds of the Hotel are really beautifully kept with big comfortable garden sofas and tables overlooking the sea. There were 3 immaculately turned out ladies, mid to late twenties I would guess, enjoying a bottle of chilled white wine. A perfect place to enjoy the company of your friends in the sun. I pretended to read the menu by the garden entrance and stayed there a good 7/8 minutes taking the scene in - during that time all 3 ladies were glued to their smart-phones and not one of them uttered a single word to each other . . . very sad

Too busy communicating to communicate.

I see this type of scenario 365 days per year now. Outside of clubs instead of chatting to the fellow club goers, people text to people who are not at the club. Cops assigned to oversee road projects are on their phones now, I don't blame them, but it just looks weird. The scenario mentioned above by Tim, and the fact that families don't eat together anymore is really bad.

The internet didn't exist then so we didn't have the distraction.

Very true and if we had, we'd never have gotten away with not paying attention 😉 The internet didn't exist then so we didn't have the distraction.

I think you might be missing the point though

I think you might be missing the point though That teenagers are more interested in their phones than proper art, yeah point totally missed 😂

If you mean the non communicating, that's the second thing the op meant surely. I thought the op was referring to not viewing the art, but I'm sure you'll correct me on this too 😉

He looks like he nodded off in 1967, and someone's just poked him with a sharp stick.

And of course you were all so keen on art when you were that age and loved the school trips didn't you 😂 I have vivid memories of a primary school trip to Llandudno. The school party went into a small newsagents/sweetshop and basically stripped the place bare. Kids today would be too busy gawping at their smartphones to do anything as enterprising as that. In secondary school, we would sometimes go to the local art gallery/museum at lunchtime, but that was mainly because there was an attractive young woman working there who wore very short skirts.
