What a fantastic trip . They say ' everything's big in America ' and I think you've proven that to be true Chris . I haven't commented in the last few days , but I've watching this thread with interest . Absolutely loved the pictures and the running commentary . Thanks for posting this Chris , I've really enjoyed it . I know you've got to experience these things for yourself , but you have given us a real flavour of what it's like to undertake a trip like this .

It's been fun reliving it Brian. I have that shot of Crater Lake as my laptop wallpaper at the moment and yesterday I looked at it and thought we were there three weeks ago today. Three weeks already. Gosh, how time flies. Which is good because it brings the next trip closer!
Over the next few days, I'll dump a load of photos into the thread that didn't make the cut for whatever reason, so keep looking.

Will do , and thanks .
Will you do something similar next year ? I've never been to America and wasn't really that bothered until I saw your threads, past and present .
Trouble is the missus thinks a trip to America means a trip to New York

I'm unsure whether it will be next year or not. We used to do this every year without fail (either the US or Canada - sometimes both) but we left it for three years between this one and the last. I'd love to do it soon though and I have already begun chewing over where we might go next.

Some wag suggested that I should call the above photo: 'Who Knew One Small Rodent Could Cause So Much Damage' Here's that little guy again, shot from the same spot with a different lens. He looks like he's turned to prayer!

We'll go back through the whole trip again, leaving out the narrative and I'll drop some interesting or fun piccies in.

On our way to Silver City, the ghost(ish) town, we kept seeing the occasional big black insect in the road. We didn't really stop to wonder what they might be or whether they might be remarkable or interesting. Here's what they looked like. On the way back, we discovered that there had been a development. The odd individual grasshopper/cricket thing crossing the road had turned into a plague of locusts! Millions of the little tinkers. They're not locusts but are known as Mormon Crickets, which is incorrect - they are actually Katydids (sneaky Steely Dan reference there). They emerge from the ground once a year, eat everything in sight INCLUDING EACH OTHER!!!, breed, lay eggs and die. I the meantime, where they d-d-d-do it in the road (sneaky Beatles reference there), the cars run over them and they turn the road into slimy leather. Car crashes proliferate where it happens on major highways...and it does. This is what the entire 20-odd mile journey back to the paved highway looked like. The sound of the tyres on the road was a tad crunchy!
