Having a brain freeze, I'm thinking of buying 2 identical amps and running them as independent l/r channels and also thinking about splitting the bass from treble, Is this possible or would i need 4 identical amps + I guess i would need 2 pairs of bi-wire speakers to achieve this?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Speaking as a punter that can break things by looking at them.... I'd stay simple and have one stereo power amp. (He says with 2 monoblocks)

You can do it with 2 stereo amps. One amp for the left speaker and one for the right. Dedicate one side (say the left channel of each amp) to the tweeter. Do the same with the other speaker/amp. You will obviously need to split the output from your source (if using integrated amps) or you preamp.
If you try this with 4 stereo amps, you will have 4 unused/wasted channels.

Your best bet might be two pairs of monoblocks and a preamp to control them. You could choose a pre with one or two volume controls. whichever suits your needs. I've got a bi-amped NVA system which is slightly different again. I use a pre to connect a stereo amp to feed my tweeters and a pair of monoblocks to feed the bass drivers.

Yes i will have a look see at that, it has to be vintage (pref silver) though. Don't have any modern stuff in the house, so may narrow my choices a bit. but thats the fun i guess sniffing out good deals and putting it together over time.

Do the sources go to the pre-amp?

AN alternative set up which I used wth great success is to use one pre amp, two stereo power amps and an active crossover. I had a MF pre amp I used in passive attenuator mode and the sources fed into this. The pre fed the 2 way active crossover, which in turn fed the two stereo power amps one fed the tweeters and the other the woofers of a pair of TDL Studio 1 Ms. The passive crosovers were removed and the detail and dynamics were mind blowing. I still have the P-140 power amps and will repeat the set up one day, maybe the next ASBO.

I use a pre and two stereo power amps. The power amps are different models from the same manufacturer - they have the same voltage gain so there are no level matching problems. The amp driving the mid and tweeters is a 50wpc model and the bass amp is 100wpc.
