How is this stopping touts, they've already got their money from fans desperate to attend a show because of the 'sold out' in 5 minutes bullshit. I just bought tickets for Roger Waters and they cost me double face value, yet they were from Ticketmaster, so how does that work?
I have two to get rid of for the night before that I can't attend, I can't return them, I can't exchange them, but if I sell them on and they invalidated then the buyer will want their money back from me, yet the promoter and artist have still got my money.
What about buying tickets as a gift, that will stop as well?
Invalidating tickets might eventually work but I doubt it. There will always be some poor sod unaware of the invalidation.
Even making it illegal with sports tickets makes no difference.
It's a minefield, that ultimately shafts the fans whichever way it goes.

Way I read it the fans can get their money back from the touts. I wondered how easy that would be.
At least Sheeran is trying to do something.
Double face value means 100% to touts. The answer will come if there is the will.

Make it illegal to charge more than face value for tickets.
Flog ticket touts on sight.
That should sort it out.

I think they're one of the few resellers who don't adhere to the new guidelines. Out of interest Stubhub is owned by eBay and their adverts on eBay are only a link to the main reselling site. I had a run in with a tout at a Kraftwerk gig last year, he was really pissing me off, he kept butting in when I was trying to get rid of a spare ticket for less than I paid for it (face value was £80) he offered me £40 for it whilst selling his stock at £150. I was all prepared to give mine away in front of him to piss him off when a girl came up and wanted to buy it, he was extremely rude to her so I sold it to her cheap to really annoy him, worked too 😂

I respect what Ed Sheeran is trying to achieve. Yeah so do I but in reality he's p****** against the wind and fans are being deprived of seeing him, you try telling your child they can't go because someone scrapped their ticket.

I would also argue that they're trying to deal with the wrong end of the issue.
The real issue they NEED TO DEAL WITH is how these touts get their tickets in the first place.
Ban Bots completely too.
It matters not a jot how much someone pays for a ticket that's totally up to the buyer. However if you remove the supply BEFORE the buyer even becomes involved then Touts can no longer profit.

Sorry to say Pearl Jam never managed to do much about Ticketmaster and they tried for years.
Ticket touts very much "the unpleasant face of capitalism".
Vaguely remember some year ago I heard of guys that went around ticket tout bashing - not that I would suggest violence would be good of course

The trick is to make it known very publicly (via fanclubs, Farcebook, Twatter, Instagrim, etc.) that all resold tickets will be invalid. Nobody will buy them, the touts will get fed up with spending shedloads for useless pieces of paper, and artists and promoters will get sick of half-empty venues. Eventually, it will be pointless for the touts to buy tickets in the first place.

Needs the will from a critical mass to change it.
Surprises me what is being changed currently. The big publicity on plastics has to be good. Change seems to be coming
Ticket prices a long way down the line from that, but it could move up

Brilliant Screw them out of business Yip, I was very sceptical about this way of dealing with it, but was unaware that the cancelled tickets would be resold ( I assume to the viagogo buyer ) at face value, now that really makes a difference.

was unaware that the cancelled tickets would be resold . . .
Yes, what happens is your ticket is marked VOID or Cancelled and the holder is then invited to the box office to purchase the same seat at face value. Viagogo as I understand are legally bound to refund the ticket, hassle I know for the holder, but if enough artists adopt this procedure, it won't be long before they have no market. So although I'm not a fan of his music, I applaud his ethics.
There is a modicum of personal responsibility here though IMO, if people keep buying the tickets at inflated prices they will keep selling them. A bit like if you build it they will come.
As an aside I have used Viagogo once in March this year. I bought a £90.00 ticket for a C2C O2 arena show for £36.00 a few hours before the show. Arguably OK perhaps, however my concious was still pricked as it wouldn't have been Viagogo who made the loss, but the original holder as it was a ticket resale for someone who couldn't attend. I have vowed to never do it again.
