Why does it exist? So they can charge over the odds for a piece of crap that serves no other purpose, that's why. Now it appears they're thinking about changing it. You'd think that was a good thing, wouldn't you? Maybe they're going to standardise it at last and make it USB like every other bloody device. Are they bollox! They're discussing changing to yet another proprietary plug, and socket, so the iPhone etc. can maintain their promise of being waterproof. You will actually need software to release the new plug from its socket if the patent they've applied for becomes reality. Why am I moaning all of a sudden? My second Apple charging lead has failed inside six months. I have one Apple device, an iPad Mini. My excuse is, I didn't have to pay for it. Am I just unlucky, or do other Apple users go through charging leads at this rate? I've just ordered half-a-dozen "no-name" leads from Amazon. Apple are not getting any more of my money. SOURCE

Good old Apple. Great marketing. Being Apple they will probably get away with it. When I speak to the boss and her Apple committed family they can do no wrong. None of these people are stupid, normally

We buy an inordinate number of replacement chargers for student Apple devices at work. You have to watch the no-name Chinese chargers that fail quickly, but the Apple branded ones are pretty expensive. We remain surprised at the general lack of reliability of Apple products considering their price.

I'm thinking they're changing it due to security issues - was that box thing that cracks istuff not used with USB/lightning ports?

That's an OS security issue, not the physical connector type used.

They still use a lightning connector for it MartinT - could be a part of the change to make it harder for that box

I find the problem with the lightning connector is often bits of dust etc getting stuck in the socket - normally sorted by careful use of a strong magnifying glass and a needle to scrape the rubbish out (don't forget to switch off). Leads that I thought had died seem to come back to life!
Cheers. Bill
