Coloratura, probably the one thing that has put more people off of opera than any other single thing. Next time somebody moans about a "pop" singer managing to fit 17 syllables into the word "baby" just point them here.

It's not necessarily my thing, although I can manage some baroque opera, but I'm interested in the mechanics and the technique.
There was a superb series called Pappano's Classical Voices on BBC Four recently which I found quite compelling in this way, even though it featured a lot of opera that I wouldn't normally listen to. Sadly it isn't on iplayer at the moment.

It's not for me at all, I'm afraid.
A mezzo-soprano can sing beautiful songs like those of Mahler without the use of coloratura.
