Must get around to testing various things to see how they influence the sound of the system.
My favourite is the Rega Isis* as the test bed for mains, supports and the like.
I wonder about Pre Amp, Power Amps (2), other ?
What favourites do you have and what is the most likely to give the best information ?
*However it is very heavy, at the top of the rack and a pain to keep shuffling for major items.

This is going to sound obvious, but my main system. I know it well and it would satisfy my need to only change one thing at a time, the rest being very familiar to me.

Do you favour one piece of kit, say the Ayre when you are trying something like supports

The Ayre is the most sensitive to change, for sure.

I’m with Martin in that it’s the whole system, and then the component being changed i.e. a pre or a DAC that forms the basis of the comparison.
For supports, anything with moving parts is what gets my attention the most - speakers, turntable and CD transport.
