I have a feeling I might not like the answer I get but I'm looking for a "plug and play" means of copying our (my wife's) DVD Boxsets onto somethig that we (she) can play back in this same way we would with our DVD/HDD combi. We will probably be talking 500 DVDs worth of content.
Here's the rub. I won't have anything to do with programs, downloads, patches, software fixes, PCs, Streaming, wireless connectivity, Laptops or anything else that's hassle. You know me by now. I don't do any of that stuff and never will. I literally want a single plug and play product that will copy my DVDs and then play them back through a TV with no extra hardware or software. Does such a thing exist? I'd also like a twin HDD so I am not at risk of kos get content should one fail, but that's desirable rather than essential.
If if such a thing exists, would 1TB be big enough?

Googled out of interest.
Seems not to be the DVD-HD box you want. Like EG: VHS/DVD recorders. Probably as most would put it in the PC and copy to HD there.
Surely easy enough to bung in a DVD rather than have it all on one HD ?
Doubt 1TB enough

I would love the video equivalent of a Brennan, with or without the amp part. I've said this before but I feel that the makers are missing a big opportunity here with both CD and DVD.
The aim of putting them all onto a storage and playback device is to avoid 100 kilos plus of overseas shipping. People these days also don't want tons of space taken up with CD and DVD software. A massive(in capacitty terms) plug and play storage/playback machine would seem to be a no brainer, yet nobody makes them.

Think the 'next step', having it online, has been made at least in lot of minds Didn't think about shipping

Online is great if you don't already own the stuff but lots of us already do. When you've paid thousands for a collection, it's not that easy to let go of it, only to pay to watch again. One Boxset alone was reduced to £150 at the time it was bought. Lots of others were £80-90 so it all adds up.
Will it always be available online when you want it too? The only way to guarantee access is to own it. I think there a lot to be said for actually owning your own content.
Also, for us, Cyprus has 8meg download speed at best and it's all wireless here so video can be unreliable. Online is only as good as the connection and things won't change here. My wife wants to watch the same Anerican trash TV anywhere in the world and wants it with her whatever the shipping costs and hassle of lugging it about. Looks like that's set to continue. Oh joy!

There's a ton of software solutions, you just need to google a few and see if any of them take your fancy. I have not tried any of them, but this was the first one I found and it looks to be quite comprehensive. videoconverter.wondershare.net/ You can search for this - rip dvd to external hard drive - on Google like I did to find more. Again, consulting Google, an "average" size for a ripped DVD appears to be between 2GB and 8GB. I'd start out reckoning on 4TB of space for your 500 DVDs. My rule of thumb - you can never have too much storage space, only too little. Your best eventual storage solution would be a NAS with twin 4GB disks in a RAID 1 configuration so that the same data is written to both disks simultaneously. i.e. instant backup. Hopefully, though, someone here has actually done what you require themselves and will be able to advise you better than Google and I can.

Thanks Slinger. The size guide in particular was very insightful and I need much more storage than I realised. The fact that I can't just plug and play with a standalone unit would kill the idea entirely for me.
It's not like I haven't tried. I even bought a Vortexbox a while ago with the intention of putting my CDs onto it. Ten minutes in, I still hadn't managed to link the thing to my laptop, so I disconnected it and sent it back before I blew a fuse.
I looked online and there are so many threads with people looking for the same thing I am. looks like we will all remain disappointed.

Even 30 minutes in could be seen as impatience. Sometimes you have to stay with an issue, do some more research, take a step back, leave it for a day and try again. If I didn't do that, especially at work, I would have failed at half the things I have running now.
I think DVD ripping software and a NAS store are going to be the best option for you, Andrew, but it'll take a bit of work to get it up and going.

I think some people just arent cut out for dealing with tech. It's why we have so many consumer products like the iPad. I just expect things to work in a plug and play way. Otherwise the fristration spoils any enjoyment.

I agree having many CDs and LPs which makes me think about continuing with Spotty. Internet down is always likely. The world at large seems to disagree with some selling or giving away entire CD and DVD collections
