Very happy to hear that payday loans are being targeted I don't disagree, Mike, they're bottom-feeding scumbags. I was thinking more from the point of view of my sympathy, which lies with the terminally ill who can do nothing to help fix themselves. Agreed here. I'm happy to see anything improved. Working on the basis of raising the bar anywhere / all round and pulling everyone up EG: If we can improve this then next let's do that. Chronic pain and impending death needs as much work as possible.

I'm afraid you've hit my 'tough love' area with that lot. Gambling, alcoholism and drugs. 'Get a grip' is my first, somewhat unsympathetic, response. Sorry, I just can't be arsed with such people when there are so many who are ill and cannot cure themselves. We'll have to agree to disagree, Martin. To quote a National Health article... "...not having control..." being the salient point. If you think telling someone who is not in control of their actions, or thought processes, to 'pull themselves together' or 'get a grip' is the answer then I hope addiction never affects a friend or family member of yours. The reality is a lot different.

I'm happy to agree to disagree with you both. They are valid points of view, each. For me, I get stuck on these people having it purely within themselves to effect a cure.

The wife of 25-year-old Denmark defender, Jonas Knudsen, gave birth to a girl several weeks earlier than expected, after he had arrived in Russia for the FIFA World Cup so Denmark's players clubbed together and paid for a private jet so Jonas could fly home and see his new-born daughter after the World Cup win over Peru. Ipswich left-back Knudsen rejoined the squad on Monday. That's what I call having good friends. " We wanted to look at the human side," said goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. " There are lots of fathers in the squad. You have to remember we are human beings as well as footballers." He added: " As a father myself I cannot imagine how hard it was for Jonas getting that message and not being there. We wanted to do anything for him to see his daughter." BBC SPORT

A Florida couple fined thousands of dollars for painting Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night onto their home as a landmark for their autistic son have received an apology from the mayor. The local city council, which had said the mural violated city code, has also agreed to allow the artwork to stay and to pay the family $15,000 (£11,500). Full article, including image.

It's a nice theory Mike, but in practice, I fear, the offence will be 'driving too close to a cyclist in the proximity of an alert police officer who gives a s**t'.
(No reflection on police officers intended)

I don't expect miracles and there won't be any
This is a good general trend and will save some cyclists some grief

Yet another interpretation law. WTF is 'too close'? So if a nice police officer decides he doesn't like the look of you, you're suddenly 'too close' to a cyclist?
I give them wide berth but get pissed off with the ones that cycle two abreast down a narrow lane.

Funnily enough I've noticed I'm getting a much wider berth than I need in the past few weeks. Apart from the idiot in a black Merc transit (Vito ?) like thing today.
A cyclist's helmet cam could have a few people in trouble and there are more and more of them.
