I recorded this ages ago and I've only just got round to watching it. It was superb. Jacqueline is/was probably my favourite classical musician, and the film showed I am not alone. The array 'household names' who appear in the film, and who still idolise her is nothing short of amazing. Sadly, it's not on iPlayer anymore, but if ever it comes back, or is re-shown, you owe it to yourself to watch it. By the way, if you ever thought that classical musicians tended towards being 'stuffed shirts' this film will change your mind, especially the "balalaika" story.

I shall watch that, too.
Am I the only one to find her Elgar Cello Concerto overwrought?

Ok, I will listen again.
I'd far rather listen to the Tortelier. He keeps the emotion in check, bringing out more of the music for me.

If she'd been an Italian brunette it would be "passionate" but she was a blonde "English rose" so it's "overwrought."

I find it difficult to separate the emotion from the music so it's perfect for me.
Not listened to Tortelier so will check it out.

I think it's partly down to the fact that it's not my favourite concerto, it's not even my favourite cello concerto. That would be the Dvorak.

Agreed 100%
I don't actually own a copy of the Elgar ...

Apart from the Elgar and the Dvorak, what other cello concertos do you guys have?

Apart from the Elgar and the Dvorak, what other cello concertos do you guys have? Try Shostakovich 1&2, Haydn wrote a few, Boccherini wrote shed-loads, definitely listen to Lalo's, check out Bruch's "Kol Nidrei" too, and don't forget Bach's cello suite. I know it's not a concerto, but it's probably the absolute pinnacle of cello music. I love cello music.

So do I - I have the Bach of course, also Boccherini and Vivaldi.
Will check out the Bruch as I love his violin concertos.
One I would love to buy is the Tortelier recording of the Walton but rather pricey on vinyl ...

I'm going through my collection...I missed C.P.E. Bach, and Saint-Saëns, Jacqueline du Pre performs a lovely version of the Schumann. You should try to hear the Charles Villiers Stanford if you haven't already. Delius' cello concerto is...well...Delius (which is a good thing in my book) and talking of British composers, one of my favourites - Sir Granville Bantock. Although he didn't, to my knowledge, write a cello concerto (more's the pity, but there are his sonatas) there's a short piece of his called "Hamabdil for cello and harp" for which the phrase "achingly beautiful" was invented. Frank Bridge wrote a nice sonata for Cello and Piano, although the very end veers a bit 'off-piste,' for me. Lastly, Dutch composer Julius Röntgen wrote several that I like. [EDIT] I forgot the Eastern Bloc - Khachaturian, Kabelevsky, Glazunov. I've got all three on one disc, by Wallfisch.

The Shostakoviches and Bachs, not sure what else without checking.
Look out for Tortelier playing the Dvorak. It really is special. Fournier isn't bad, either.
